I’d take on a bunch of extra work at the office, attend every party, and help out where I can whenever I’m needed. That was all well and good until I felt tired and burned out and had no time left to be with myself. I eventually realized my habits were ruining my mental health. Once I had worked on this and figured it out, I started to feel more relaxed and even happier.

Comparing Yourself to Others
If you constantly compare yourself to other people, you’re just going to be unsatisfied with yourself all the time. This can bring your self-esteem down as well. Remember, everyone has their own struggles; they might be facing them in their own way. So, instead of focusing on other people’s lives and how they are doing, focus on yours. Always remembering what you are doing right helps you to become a healthier version of yourself.
Ignoring Your Own Needs
Putting other people first sounds good, but it will leave you drained. And if you’re always putting others before yourself, then you burn out. Learn to draw the line and take care of yourself. Do not let yourself feel guilty about caring for yourself; you have to be fit and healthy enough to care for others.
Overthinking and Second-Guessing
Thinking too much is mentally draining and leads to a life of anxiety and fear. You might replay scenarios or fret over things that may never happen. Try to be mindful and be present in the moment. Find the point at which overthinking begins and take a step back.
Holding Grudges
When you resent others it hurts you only. You get weighed down by anger and bitterness that never goes away, even when the other person has already come to terms with you. Try to forgive and forget and it will help you to free your mind from any kind of toxicity.

You might make mistakes but playing them back over and over again in your head will make you frustrated. After all, everyone makes mistakes, that’s how we learn. Retrain yourself to think about mistakes as lessons and you’ll feel much more at ease.
Seeking Perfection
If you insist on everything being perfect, you are pushing yourself further than you can handle. Rather, strive for improvement, not perfection. Small imperfections can in fact be the seeds of unexpected blessings and progress.
Avoiding Emotions
When you turn your back on your emotions, they will always attack back. Spend time recognizing and working through your feelings — journaling, talking with a friend, or consulting with a therapist. Your emotions are valid and responding to them will heal your mind.
Overloading Yourself with Tasks
We’re used to believing that we can ‘do it all’ but our mental health gets screwed. We are accustomed to feeling like we can have it all, which is a shame for our mental health. Teach yourself to delegate, say no, and be specific. You know, you have power in knowing your limits.
Constantly Seeking Approval
Trusting other people for every decision makes you feel vulnerable and reliant on them. Although it is pleasing, praise shouldn’t be a sign of your worth. Be a self-validator – see what you are capable of, validate yourself with your own successes and value regardless of whether other people like it or not.
Ignoring Your Physical Health
Your physical and emotional health go hand in hand and if you’re neglecting your body it will be reflected in your mood and energy. Things such as being unfit, eating poorly, or sleeping less all make stress difficult to deal with. Introduce little healthy changes, such as walking every day, eating well, and sleeping better. If you are physically fit, that can help you stay healthy mentally.
Living in the Past or Future
When we are replaying things over and over or worrying about the future, it causes us to have so much unnecessary stress. This is because you are missing out on what’s going on right now. Feel each moment and take it as it comes, without worrying about yesterday or tomorrow.
