7 Canadian wineries with award-winning fall vintages

It’s no secret that Canada’s vineyards are fantastic. And this fall, they’ve done rather well, with several bottles winning medals at the National Wine Awards of Canada & in Nova Scotia’s top provincial wine honours. Here are seven Canadian wineries with award-winning fall vintages. Which of these would you like to visit?

Mission Hill did more than show up. They impressed with their 2022 Perpetua Chardonnay, which picked up a Platinum medal at the National Wine Awards of Canada this summer. The wine, which comes from the Okanagan Valley, landed among the very top Chardonnay picks of the entire competition.

Down the road in West Kelowna, Quails’ Gate’s 2022 Rosemary’s Block Chardonnay also won a Platinum. This single-block wine has become something of a local favourite. However, this time it was the national judges who gave it top marks. They loved its lemon & pear taste.

SpearHead had a double celebration this year. Not only did their Pommard Clone Pinot Noir 2022 bring home a Platinum medal at the Nationals, but another Pinot from the same vintage also earned the same honour. It’s rare for one winery to land two Platinums in Pinot Noir. Yet their Kelowna vines managed to pull it off.

You’ll find the Hidden Bench winery in Niagara & their Felseck Vineyard Chardonnay 2022 scored Gold at the Nationals. But that’s not all. They then picked up a Silver at Decanter’s World Wine Awards in London. The wine is made from a single vineyard hidden in the Beamsville Bench, which gives the Chardonnay a distinctly mineral edge.

Tantalus Vineyards is just above East Kelowna. The company saw its Blanc de Noir 2022 literally sparkle, as it won Gold in the sparkling category at the Nationals. This bottle is made entirely from Pinot Noir grapes & handled like a Champagne-style wine. As such, it stood out among its B.C. competitors.

Lightfoot & Wolfville’s Small Lot Trio Brut 2017

Over on the East Coast, Lightfoot & Wolfville received one of Nova Scotia’s top honours, the Lieutenant-Governor’s Award for Excellence in Nova Scotia Wines. This was awarded to Lightfoot’s Small Lot Trio Brut 2017. It’s a traditional-method sparkling that spent years on the lees before release, which could be why it was so successful at the July ceremony in Halifax.

La Cantina Vallée d’Oka’s Pinot Noir 2023

Quebec’s wine scene is nothing to laugh at, either, and the province had its own reason to celebrate. La Cantina Vallée d’Oka’s Pinot Noir 2023 earned a Gold medal at the Nationals. The wine is produced just outside Montreal, where cooler fall nights help the grapes stay bright & crisp. This was one of the few Quebec reds to receive a top medal this year.
