Remember the days when travelling meant to relax, see the world & just have fun? Vacations seem a bit more stressful these days, and not just because of planning. We are constantly seeing new trends in travel – which makes the whole experience harder for everyone – be it crowds or people who are more focused on their TikTok than actually doing something. Some of them might seem harmless but over time, it’s making travelling less than enjoyable. In this list, let’s talk about travel trends taking vacations by storm and taking everything down with it.

Overtourism
Some places are so crowded they almost feel like a theme park rather than a destination. For example, imagine Venice, packed with people, or Everest, literally full of hikers. Not only is it a hassle for tourists but it’s hard on the environment and on its inhabitants. When a sleepy seaside town suddenly becomes Times Square, everyone’s frustrated.
Social Media Staging
Have you ever seen someone spend half an hour setting up that “perfect” shot in a scenic location? Rather than enjoying the view, they’re more focused on Instagram likes. Worse, these pictures tend to set unrealistic expectations. That hidden beach? It’s actually full of people trying to copy the same picture.
Overuse of Drones
Drones offer spectacular views but have turned into a real nuisance at popular places. Let’s say you’re sitting by a calm lake and all of a sudden there’s this weird buzzing overhead. That’s like sharing your quiet time with a giant mosquito. And let’s be real — nobody wants to be in someone else’s drone footage.
Excessive TikTok Challenges
Everyone loves a good laugh but there are travelers that overdo it. Climbing on top of crumbling monuments, playing tricks on innocent tourists — it’s not funny, it’s disruptive. These are stunts that will get some attention on the internet. But they ruin the vibe for everyone else trying to enjoy the place.
Airbnb Overload
Originally Airbnb was a way to save money on your travels, but it’s run amok. In many cities, whole neighborhoods have become Airbnb zones that drive up rents and force out locals. And don’t forget the parties, traffic & trash some temporary tenants leave behind, which makes life more challenging for their actual residents.
Influencer Entitlement
Some influencers expect everything free – meals, hotels, tours, etc. – just because they’ll post about it. That might be fine for a few, but it has frustrated a lot of business. Plus, regular travelers can’t appreciate these influencers monopolizing every available table or preferred room in a hotel just for content.
Disrespecting Local Culture
Some tourists don’t pay attention to local culture – be it disrespecting dress codes at temples or being too loud in quiet cities. This disrespect gives a bad name to tourists & makes natives feel less welcoming. Let’s say you go to a religious place, and you see someone taking selfies wearing an inappropriate outfit – it’s embarrassing for everyone.
Mass Souvenir Shops
You will no longer be able to buy original, handmade goods to take home. Tourist attractions now overflow with the same cheap mass-produced souvenirs. It’s bad enough to go searching for the perfect piece only to encounter rows of “I ❤️ [Insert City]” keychains that appear to be coming out of the same factory.
Overbooked Flights
Airlines have been packing as many people as they can on planes, and it’s become too much. The overbooked flights lead to passengers being bumped – this causes stress & delays. Is your vacation going to begin with a seat-battle or a long line at the airport? Not exactly your dream holiday.
Nonstop Smartphone Use
Holidays used to be a chance to escape, now everyone is glued to their phones. From social media feeds to work emails, you can’t take your eyes off the screen. You’ll even see people trying to capture a concert or sunset rather than actually watching it. At times, it feels like nobody’s even there anymore.
Overpacking Itineraries
Planning a vacation with days of constant activities seems appealing, until everything becomes chaotic and stressful. Going from one location/activity to another never allows you time to relax, much less appreciate where you are. You’re not creating memory but ticking boxes — and probably killing yourself on the way.
Animal Exploitation for Tourism
Although riding elephants or holding captive dolphins sounds like a good idea, animals pay a high price. These practices are often cruel. Although it’s becoming increasingly recognized, a lot of visitors still book the tours. Supporting these attractions just keeps the cycle going.
Travel Shaming
Here’s a more recent trend that’s irritating – judging people by their travel habits. Whether it’s flying instead of taking a train, going to popular tourist attractions over hidden gems, or paying top dollar for a hotel room, somebody will always have an opinion. It is vacation time – not a contest for the most “ethical” tourist.
