Visiting rural America is a real shock to the system for anyone who’s spent their life in the city! After all, the wide-open spaces & peacefulness of it all are so special—and, of course, the incredible wildlife. You won’t find them anywhere else! Many interesting animals call rural America their home and we’re looking at twelve of them.

North American Elk
Have you ever seen an elk? They’re huge and with such giant antlers, they’re quite hard to miss. North American elk often roam open woodlands where there’s plenty of grass & shrubs to munch on. Seeing one of them in the wild is special. Why? Because they remind us of how wild and free rural America still is.
Bald Eagles
Nothing says “America” quite like the bald eagle. These birds are seriously impressive thanks to their wide wingspan & keen eyesight. They prefer places where the air is clean and they can fish in unpolluted waters. Seeing a bald eagle soaring above a rural lake is a sight that you won’t forget.
White-tailed Deer
Even though white-tailed deer are relatively common, that doesn’t make them any less beautiful. They’re so graceful and you’ll see them all over the forests & fields of rural America. Count yourself lucky if you see one with its tail up, showing off that white underside—it means they’re warning the other deer about something. Maybe it’s you!
American Bison
Bison used to roam the plains in massive herds and thanks to conservation efforts, they’re making a comeback. Seeing a herd of bison grazing on the grasslands is a reminder of what America used to look like. These magnificent creatures truly symbolize the American West. Better yet, they also teach us about the importance of wildlife management & preservation.
Wild Turkeys
Forget Thanksgiving—wild turkeys are interesting animals all year round. They have some incredible plumage and make the funniest sounds. Despite how they might look, wild turkeys are surprisingly agile and can fly short distances—it’s quite a sight if you’re fortunate enough to catch it.
Coyotes
Coyotes are always up to something! They’re not picky eaters (which helps them survive in all kinds of places) and hearing a coyote howl at night is one of those definitive rural experiences. Coyotes make the most of their surroundings. Just seeing one will remind you of the wildness that still exists even close to human settlements.
Prairie Dogs
Prairie dogs are social animals and their “towns” get quite large. These little guys are incredibly important to their ecosystem since they’re an important food source for predators and they help to aerate the soil—that helps all animals. And let’s not forget the joy of watching them pop in and out of their holes!
Bobcats
Bobcats are some of the most elusive animals around since they keep to themselves in the forests & deserts. But don’t let that fool you—they’re incredible hunters and will go after all kinds of prey. Spotting a bobcat is quite rare yet they have been known to attack humans before. If you see one, keep your distance!
Eastern Box Turtles
Eastern Box turtles are one of the few turtle species that live on land—but that’s not the only reason they’re so cool. They have a domed shell that they can close up tight to protect themselves. They eat all sorts of things like insects & berries and seeing one of them in the wild is always a treat.
Great Horned Owls
With their powerful talons & deep hooting calls, great horned owls are a truly mystical presence in wooded areas. These owls are some of the best predators as they hunt mice and other birds. You won’t forget the experience of seeing one perched silently on a tree branch, camouflaged perfectly with its surroundings.
Black Bears
There’s no denying that black bears certainly look intimidating, although they usually prefer to avoid humans. They’d rather stick to picking berries and catching fish! It’s rare to see one in the flesh—but if it does happen, it’s a moment that’ll get your heart racing. Clearly, wildlife still thrives in rural America.
Monarch Butterflies
The most famous thing about monarch butterflies is their incredible migration journey that spans thousands of miles. These butterflies bring a little color to the landscape and seeing one in the fall is incredible. But beyond their physical beauty, monarch butterflies help their ecosystems by pollinating plants as they feed on nectar.
