There’s something really special about packing up the car & going on a road trip. Of course, flying gets you there faster—but, for me, driving makes the journey into an adventure itself! Traveling by road offers so much that air travel just can’t match. Here are the ten reasons why I always go for the open road over flying, including being able to stop whenever something catches my eye & soak in the experiences along the way.

Freedom to Change Course
One of the best things about road trips is being able to change plans on the fly. If I see a sign for the world’s largest ball of twine or a gorgeous photo opportunity, I’ll just pull over & check it out because there’s no strict itinerary holding me back! Such spontaneity makes each journey more exciting because you never know what you’ll find on the way. And it’s those unexpected discoveries that end up being some of the highlights of my trips.
Experiencing the Changing Landscape
Watching the scenery change as I drive is something I never get tired of. As I travel through different areas in America, I get to see everything—like lush forests in Oregon & the massive plains of Kansas, as well as the rugged mountains of Colorado. Being on the ground lets me truly experience each place in a way I wouldn’t be able to do if I flew. I’m able to just soak in the views whenever I want & honestly, that feels rather great.
Creating a Personal Soundtrack
For me, making the perfect playlist is a big part of any road trip & so I’ll choose songs that match my mood or the scenery. For example, I’ll have upbeat tunes to sing along to as well as mellow tracks for those quiet stretches. Having control over what’s playing makes the time on the road far more enjoyable as the miles simply fly by—and it’s a lot more personal, too.
No Baggage Restrictions
When I’m packing for a road trip, I don’t have to worry about airline baggage limits. Instead, I’ll load up my car with everything I might need, whether that’s bulky camping gear or a cooler full of snacks & drinks. There’s room for comfort items too! Not having to measure out liquids or weigh my bags makes getting ready much less stressful since I, quite literally, can take anything I want.
Avoiding Airport Hassles
Skipping all the usual airport hassles is a huge relief. I don’t have to deal with long security lines, take off my shoes—or worry about arriving hours before departure. Rather than waiting around at the gate, I’ll leave when I’m ready and start my journey feeling relaxed. Best of all, you don’t have to deal with flight delays due to bad weather. You can just change your departure time when driving. You really don’t get that sort of flexibility when you’re flying because you’re at the mercy of the airline instead.
Spending Quality Time with Companions
Road trips allow you to spend quality time with friends or family. You’re in the car together for hours, which allows for deep conversations & shared laughter—and memorable moments. On one trip that I took with my friends, we had a marathon sing-along session! It’s these shared experiences that make the journey just as enjoyable as the destination. That’s something you just can’t put a price on!
Discovering Hidden Gems
One of my favorite parts of road trips is finding those hidden gems along the way. As I pass through different towns, I’ll come across an incredible diner with the best pie I’ve ever tasted or a quirky roadside museum that’s not listed in any guidebook. It’s these unexpected discoveries that make my travels more exciting—taking the less-traveled road is a true highlight. Unfortunately, you’ll never get that from sitting in a plane or going through airports.
Controlling My Own Schedule
You don’t realize how great it is to have complete control over your schedule until you finally get it! Now, I’m able to decide to sleep in and start later or hit the road early to make the most of the day. If I’m feeling tired, I can stop over without worrying about missing a connection. I have a sort of flexibility that allows me to tailor the trip to how I’m feeling each day—you don’t get that with a flight. And that’s exactly why you should give road trips a try.
Comfort of My Own Vehicle
Traveling in the comfort of my own car makes the journey so much more enjoyable since I’m familiar with all the controls. I can set the temperature & seating exactly how I like it! I also have the privacy to relax or have conversations without strangers nearby. It’s a personal space that you’ll never get from flying. But that’s not all—I have all the legroom I could ever want!
Saving Money
Usually, road trips are a lot more budget-friendly than flying and especially when traveling with others. I avoid the cost of plane tickets, baggage fees & all those other airline charges that add up quickly. Now, we split the cost of gas & lodging expenses among passengers. It leaves me with more money to spend on fun activities. I’ll even have some cash left over to visit some cool restaurants. No more paying for overpriced water or snacks!
