I think we have all seen some spin-off shows that we know were just unnecessary! I remember getting excited for some of them – only to be let down by poorly shot scenes, flat narratives or a complete lackluster attempt at recreating the original magic. Apart from the intense lack of charm – almost as if there was an overload of effort to make lightning strike twice – what we ended up getting instead were misguided shoes that fell more than a dozen miles shy of the original they were based on.
In this list, I share 7 sitcom spin-offs that — in my personal opinion – should never have made it past episode one.

“Joey” (2004-2006)

Remember Joey from “Friends”? He was great in the original series, but Matt LeBlanc’s solo show wasn’t as enjoyable. The show tried to delve into his Hollywood career, which did not work out well. The jokes were strained, and the new characters just weren’t as good or funny as those from “Friends.” It bled viewers rapidly, and many said it probably should have been a one-and-done.
The Brady Bunch Hour (1976–1977)

This variety show was designed to revive the classic “Brady Bunch” in a new way. The first cast did dance numbers and sketches, but they never worked. The Brady Family-type charm was absent, and the show felt very awkward. Although much appreciated by those who loved the sitcom, this probably wasn’t a realistic basis for a show, and it was also canceled after one season.
“The Conners” (2018-Present)

After Roseanne Barr was fired, the once-popular show “Roseanne” continued without her. The new version, of course, was not performed to the same energy and humor that some had apparently wanted from a sequel. The characters seemed changed, and the storylines didn’t hit home so much. Some fans wish they didn’t air it at all & wrapped this thing up after the first episode.
“The Muppets” (2015-2016)

This show attempted to age the Muppets hard and fast – reality-show style – but it was not meant to be. Fans were longing for the charm and energy from earlier Muppet shows and films. The humor was more forced, and the characters felt one-note. They were expecting the heart and laughter that they remembered, but what actually happened was a show that felt out of place on their television screens, leading to its ultimate demise.
The Facts of Life: The Reunion (2001)

Although it was just a TV movie meant to reunite the beloved characters from “The Facts of Life,” it wasn’t well-received by everyone. The storylines were tired, and the characters felt like they lacked a certain life force that the fans saw in them previously. What ensued was quite a letdown.
“Knight Rider 2000” (1991)

This attempt at re-branding the original ‘Knight Rider’ series failed horribly. The original was certainly fun, but the reboot just didn’t seem to have the charm and appeal of the original. Original series fans were as unimpressed and felt just as alienated, and the story failed to reel them in. It failed to find an audience and got axed shortly afterward.
“That ’80s Show” (2002)

This show tried to do what That ’90s Show is attempting now—recapturing the magic of That ’70s Show but set in a different era. Sadly, it failed. Characters were flat, and the humor often came off as dated rather than nostalgic. Fans were let down because they wanted something just a little different (and good) but received an inferior product instead. It was on shaky ground in terms of viewership and only lasted one season.
