10 Shows Many Viewers Confess They Pretend To Watch

We all nod along when we get into a conversation about that one show everyone seems to be watching these days, even when we haven’t finished a single full episode. Or we tried it once and couldn’t get into it, or the hype just passed us by. Or we’re pretending to be into it just so we can stop getting the “Wait, you haven’t seen it?!” lecture every time the topic comes up. Whatever the case, here are 10 shows people often claim to have seen but are secretly lying about.

Everyone says it’s the smartest show on TV, so you nod and agree even though you have no idea what is going on. But in all honesty, after a few episodes of privileged people yelling at each other in business talk, you tapped out. You haven’t touched it since season one.

The Crown

Everyone says it’s a “beautiful, slow-burn drama,” and the sets are gorgeous. But if you’re being honest with yourself, you haven’t watched a single minute since they switched out the entire cast. You just smile and nod and agree when someone mentions the character arc of Queen Elizabeth II and say, “Yeah, that was done so well.”

Stranger Things

You know the characters and can rattle off the ’80s nostalgia moments and the Upside Down 101 because you saw season one and have since been catching up on all the TikToks. You haven’t watched any of the most recent seasons, though, and you’re legitimately not even sure who some of the new characters are.

Game of Thrones

You hopped on the hype train hardcore at one point until it started becoming a plot twistier than your high school literature class. You either quit halfway through season five or just watched the finale, so you could say you did. You still mutter “Winter is coming” at the right moments to sound legit.

Euphoria

You get all deep and pretentious about the cinematography and Zendaya’s performance, and fashion. But if you’re being honest with yourself, you have no clue what’s happening from one episode to the next.

Westworld

You watched the pilot and thought, “Wow, this is going to be deep.” Then you got to episode three and got massively lost. You haven’t watched since. You still say, “Oh, it’s on my list. I just need to rewatch the first season,” when someone mentions it.

The Wire

Every serious TV fan claims to have seen it, and it’s practically a rite of passage. But let’s be real, you watched a few episodes and it felt like a slow police procedural with way too many characters to keep track of. You just call it a “masterpiece” at this point in conversations, so you don’t look like a poser.

Breaking Bad

You know it’s iconic. You know all about Walter White and the “Say my name” scene and the time they did whatever with the all-white room. But you also know that five whole seasons is a lot to commit to when it comes to shows, and you’re just so tired.

The Bachelor / Bachelorette

You claim you either “just keep up for fun” or you watch it ironically. If someone asked you who was left on this season, though, you’d draw a complete blank. You’ve never seen a single episode start to finish, but you’re very happy to trash-talk the latest drama, though.

Severance

It’s on your “prestige show” list, and you’ve even definitely told people it’s mind-blowing. Truthfully, you tried to watch it, got totally confused within the first 20 minutes, and haven’t even looked at it since. You still pretend you’ve finished it because no one wants to admit they didn’t “get it.”
