Speak Less, Listen More
Many youngsters complain that adults ignore their voices. When you give them time & an ear, they feel that you honestly care about how they feel and respect their thoughts & emotions. Do not try to advise them; instead, try to understand their perspective. Just keep nodding and asking thoughtful follow-up questions. This will help them feel like their feelings are not neglected or muted. They will be convinced that you are genuinely curious about them.
Open Your Mind
We often reject new ideas because they are different from what we believe in. Keep in mind that young people look at things with fresh perspectives shaped by generational experiences that are alien to us. If you want to connect with them, do something simple: just accept their perspectives & it will create mutual respect.
Learn About Their Interests
You don’t need to be on TikTok or be good at video games to connect with youngsters. Just show them that you have a shared interest in their passions, such as music, sports, or hobbies. You can do this by asking the simple question, “What do you enjoy about this?”
Share Your Own Stories
Did you know that when you share your personal stories, youngsters find you more relatable? Tell them all about your wins & setbacks, and they will start to see a connection between you & them. Your authentic words are more impactful than you think.
Respect Their Individuality
Every youngster has their own dreams, values & fears. Their choices might seem strange to you, but still, be supportive of them. When you respect them for their true identities, youngsters will become more transparent & genuine with you.
Use Technology to Connect
For younger generations, technology is a natural part of life they need like food and water. You don’t need to be a tech expert, but learning some basics of Instagram & Discord will show them that you are flexible & willing to mingle. Sharing memes & reacting to their social media posts can keep the conversations fun & ongoing.
Welcome Their Opinions
Just like us, every youngster wants to feel that their thoughts matter. You should encourage them to share their opinions on current events, movies, and books & even ask for their opinion when you have to make an important decision. By asking, “What do you think about this?” you convince them that you value their thoughts & ideas.
Be Patient & Non-Judgmental
Sometimes, young people have to make tough life choices & deal with a web of complex emotions. They might make wrong decisions due to a lack of maturity & experience. When this happens, be kind to them & respond with patience instead of frustration. Don’t judge them for their mistakes. This way, they will open up to you without fearing criticism.
Do Fun Things Together
Do you want to get closer to your nephew? Do something fun together! Go on a hike, have a movie night, or do some cooking & enjoy a meal. Shared activities naturally lead to long chit-chats. After all, the best connections happen while having fun together.
Be a Guide, Not a Boss
Guide youngsters only if they ask for it. Don’t try to control every part of their lives. Your role is to support, not control. They should have the freedom to make mistakes & learn from their own experiences. Respect their boundaries, & they will respect you back.
Be Real With Them
Youngsters have a sixth sense & can tell right away when someone is being insincere. Don’t force yourself to use current slang or pretend to be interested in things that don’t excite you. Just be yourself, & your authenticity will make them see you as trustworthy.
