10 subtle signs someone is not enjoying your company

While it’s not always easy to tell how they’re feeling, sometimes, people give off little signals that they’re just not that into the conversation.

Frequently Checking Their Phone

Someone who can’t stop glancing at their phone while you’re talking is bored or looking for a distraction.

They’re not fully engaged in the moment with you. Instead, they’re probably itching for a reason to wrap things up. Perhaps it’s time to end the conversation and let them do their thing.

Giving Short Answers

Most people who are engaged in a conversation love to share their opinions and thoughts. If you’re getting nothing but one-word answers, the other person is probably not that into your conversation.

This makes the conversation awkward and one-sided.

Avoiding Eye Contact

Eye contact is one of the most important parts of connecting with other people and avoiding it is a red flag. Anyone who seems to find anything else in the room more interesting to look at is someone who’s probably not fully with you.

Of course, it might just be that they feel intimidated, but even so, a lack of eye contact makes the conversation feel disjointed.

Closed-Off Body Language

Similar to eye contact, body language can tell you a lot about what someone is feeling. Are their arms crossed? Do they seem to turn their body away from you? When they’re closed off physically, then they’re probably feeling the same way mentally, too.

It’s a strong sign that they’re not into the conversation or that they feel a bit uncomfortable in the situation. Maybe it’s time to move the topic on.

Checking the Time Repeatedly

Looking at a watch once in a while is ok, but if they’re doing it over and over, the chances are they’re counting down the minutes.

Naturally, it feels as awkward as it sounds. Seeing someone literally watching the time during a nice catch-up means that they’d rather be anywhere else but there.

Lack of Curiosity

When people enjoy each other’s company, there’s usually a natural flow of questions; people want to catch up and learn what’s new. As such, any conversation that lacks this sense of curiosity is likely not a very interesting one.

Someone who doesn’t care to ask questions also doesn’t care about the conversation, or at least they’re not eager to contribute much.

Yawning or Sighing

Let’s face it, we all yawn sometimes. But if someone is constantly yawning or sighing while you’re talking, it’s probably their body’s way of saying they’re just as tired physically as they are of the conversation.

While yawning is an involuntary reaction, it’s pretty hard to disguise. It can also make you feel a bit deflated when you see it happening too often.

Preferring Group Hangouts

Some people are just more into talking in groups and that’s perfectly okay, although someone who always avoids hanging out one-on-one might not want to spend time with you.

They might be constantly suggesting getting a group together because it means they don’t have to talk directly to you so much. Instead, they can just brush you off on someone else. That’s never fun.

Constantly Switching Topics

Not every conversation needs to be meaningful but some of them should be. If you’re trying to have a meaningful conversation and the other person keeps changing the subject, it’s likely because they’re uncomfortable, or at least not interested, in the topics at hand.

Frequently avoiding deeper discussions stops you from connecting on a deeper level. Soon enough, it’s difficult to have any sort of rhythm in your conversations.

Talking About How Busy They Are

This is one of the most common tactics. Mentioning how packed their schedule is can be a hint that they’re too busy for a long conversation and are essentially prepping the other person for a quick getaway.

As such, you won’t feel surprised when they eventually cut things short. On the plus side, it does suggest they’re trying to spare your feelings, so they care for you on some level.
