10 Haunted Locations in Montreal That Some Locals Still Avoid

Montreal is famous for its smoked meat & festivals. But it’s so much more than that. The city has some ghost stories that might make your skin crawl, especially the ones that include strange noises & sightings that have never been explained.

Here are ten haunted locations in Montreal that some locals still avoid. Which one are you brave enough to visit after dark?

Most people in Griffintown will tell you the same thing about William & Murray. You shouldn’t linger too long there. In 1879, the beheaded body of a woman named Mary Gallagher was discovered there.

She’s apparently still there to this day. Locals swear they’ve seen her wandering around, looking for her missing head, and many of the residents think that visiting that corner is bad luck.

Auberge Saint-Gabriel, Old Montreal

The Auberge Saint-Gabriel might look like a nice & cozy place. But it’s actually one of the city’s most haunting locations. Staff claim they’ve heard piano songs playing in the bar when nobody is near the keys, while guests have apparently seen a little girl in old-fashioned clothes.

She apparently sits giggling by the fireplace. Yes, the place feels warm, but there’s also something so chilling about it, too.

Centaur Theatre, former Stock Exchange

The Centaur Theatre has class & history. Apparently, it also has a few uninvited performers. The staff members working there after closing hours have said they’ve seen lights turn on & doors creak.

Some even claim they’ve seen phantom lights going around when all the lights are actually off. Just what on earth could it be?

Old Royal Victoria Hospital, Pine Avenue

It makes sense that a hospital would be haunted. The Old Royal Victoria Hospital is a huge, grey building right above McGill, and it still gives people the creeps.

Numerous nurses have complained about hearing footsteps in locked wings. Construction workers have supposedly seen carts rolling down empty halls. While the hospital has been closed for years, nobody seems eager to explore the site after sunset.

McGill University Arts Building

McGill also has its fair share of dark history. The University Arts Building is by far one of the prettiest buildings on site, but janitors & night guards have stories that will make you see it differently.

They’ve supposedly heard footsteps in the building when nobody’s there. A few people have allegedly seen shadows moving just out of sight. Believers claim it’s the spirits of those from the old anatomy classes.

Many students who live in the Concordia Residence of the Grey Nuns Motherhouse have said they’ve seen an extra roommate. The old convent still has a crypt in the basement.

People claim they hear whispers in the halls or feel something brush past them late at night. It’s a little more difficult to get a good night’s sleep during finals week here.

Mount Royal Cemetery bluffs

You may want to avoid walking near the Mount Royal Cemetery bluffs at dusk. Why? Because it feels like something, or someone, is watching you.

Groundskeepers have many stories to tell about figures fading into the trees & hikers have supposedly seen someone mysterious standing by the cliff. But then they realize that nobody was actually there.

Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery

Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery is next to Mount Royal. It’s no surprise that it has its own set of ghostly stories. Visitors have heard bells coming from sealed mausoleums & seen lantern lights going through the rows of graves.

The cemetery may be beautiful by day. But at night, it’s far creepier.

You’ll find the Château Ramezay museum across from City Hall. It was built in 1705 & it sure does look nice, until you stay past closing.

Apparently, someone continues to walk through the old governor’s quarters, and tourists have seen a man in colonial dress. He supposedly disappears when you look at him twice.

Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel

Like many churches, Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel has a crypt underneath. It’s in the crypt where most of the ghost sightings happen. Visitors say the air feels different & a few claim they felt overwhelmingly dizzy at the lower level.

The staff have also heard faint humming noises during closing. It could just be echoes. But would you want to stick around long enough to find out?
