From paper planners to physical media, some supposedly outdated products are finding new customers who weren’t even around when they were mainstream.
1. Vinyl Records Became a Real Music Business Again
Vinyl isn’t merely a collector’s hobby anymore. RIAA reported U.S. vinyl revenue reached $1.0 billion in the first half of 2025, marking the first time the format passed the billion-dollar mark in a half-year. Younger listeners helped turn something once considered obsolete into a major music category.
2. Digital Cameras Are Getting Cool Again
Compact digital cameras from the 2000s are showing up in the hands of younger consumers who want photos that look less polished than smartphone images. The appeal is partly the limitation: fewer filters, fewer editing options and a physical device dedicated to taking pictures.
3. Paper Planners Are Back on Desks
Digital calendars dominate work, but paper planning has found a younger audience. The global paper stationery market is projected to grow through the decade, while brands such as Moleskine and Papier have built businesses around notebooks, journals and physical planning.
4. Point-and-Shoot Printers Are Having a Moment
Instant cameras such as Fujifilm Instax turned physical photos into a mainstream novelty again. Fujifilm says its Instax business shipped more than 100 million cameras globally by 2024, showing that younger consumers haven’t abandoned physical photography.
5. Cooking From Scratch Looks Less Old-Fashioned
Younger Americans are rediscovering kitchen habits their parents took for granted. FMI’s 2025 research found 36% of consumers said they were cooking more meals from scratch, while younger shoppers increasingly look for cooking inspiration through social media.
6. The Landline’s Replacement Isn’t Always Another Phone
The bigger comeback is the desire for technology with fewer distractions. Wired devices, dedicated cameras, physical books and paper planners all share the same appeal: they perform one job without demanding attention from everything else.
