#1 Pac-Man
This maze-running classic by Namco was a global phenomenon. With just a joystick and a single button, players controlled the titular Pac-Man, gobbling yellow dots and power pellets while strategically avoiding the clutches of Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde, the colorful ghost enemies.
#2 Space Invaders
Tomohiro Nishikado’s Space Invaders was a pioneer in the shoot ’em up genre, laying the groundwork for countless games to come. Players used a joystick and button to control a laser cannon at the bottom of the screen, strategically firing upwards to defend Earth from waves of alien invaders descending in rows. As the aliens marched closer, increasing the firing rate became crucial for survival, making Space Invaders a test of both reflexes and quick thinking.
#3 Donkey Kong
Shigeru Miyamoto’s iconic creation introduced the world to Mario, a character destined for video game superstardom. In Donkey Kong, our mustachioed plumber must navigate a series of increasingly complex construction scaffolds, jumping over barrels and avoiding fire hazards thrown by the antagonist, Donkey Kong. The ultimate goal? Rescue the damsel in distress, Pauline, from the clutches of the angry ape at the top.
#4 Galaga
Another space shooter from Namco, Galaga offered a unique twist on the genre. Players controlled a lone spaceship facing off against waves of alien enemies in various formations. Dual firing capabilities and a mechanic where destroying a specific alien pod could transform a captured fighter into a helpful second ship added strategic depth. Galaga demanded focus on both offense and defense, making it a thrilling battle for survival.
#5 Street Fighter II
Capcom’s fighting game revolutionized the genre with its diverse cast of eight playable characters, each with their own unique fighting styles and special moves. Street Fighter II introduced the concept of combo attacks, rewarding players for mastering button sequences to unleash devastating attacks on their opponents.
#6 Ms. Pac-Man
Building on the phenomenal success of Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man offered a fresh take on the maze-running formula. Taking control of Pac-Man’s leading lady, players navigated new and more intricate mazes, with colorful fruits replacing the power pellets. These fruits offered a variety of point bonuses, adding another layer of strategy to chomping through dots.
#7 Centipede
Developed by Atari, Centipede wasn’t your typical shoot ’em up. This game offered a unique perspective, placing players at the bottom of a garden tasked with defending it from a relentless wave of creepy crawlies. The main antagonist, a giant multi-segmented centipede, inched its way down the screen, requiring players to strategically shoot off segments to slow its progress and score points.
#8 Frogger
Konami’s Frogger presented a unique blend of action and strategy. Players controlled a frog attempting to navigate a busy road and treacherous river to reach his home on the other side. Vehicles of all shapes and sizes whizzed by, while logs and snapping turtles offered precarious passage across the water. Careful timing and route planning were key to Frogger’s success, making each successful hop across the road a small victory.
#9 Tetris
Alexey Pajitnov’s puzzle game Tetris is a timeless classic with a simple yet deceptively deep gameplay loop. Players control a series of falling tetrominoes, the classic seven geometric shapes used in the game. The goal is to strategically rotate and place these tetrominoes to form complete horizontal lines, which then disappear and award points. As the game progresses, the speed of the falling tetrominoes increases, demanding quick thinking and spatial awareness to avoid letting the playing field fill up.
#10 Mortal Kombat
Developed by Midway Games, Mortal Kombat wasn’t just another fighting game. It broke new ground with digitized graphics that made characters look like real actors, a stark contrast to the cartoony sprites of previous titles. But the element that truly set Mortal Kombat apart was its violence. Defeating opponents wasn’t enough; players could unleash finishing moves called Fatalities, which were elaborate and gory displays of violence.
#11 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Konami’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game capitalized on the immense popularity of the cartoon series. Players could choose to control their favorite turtle hero, each with their own unique weapon and fighting style. Leonardo, the leader, wielded twin katanas; Raphael, the hothead, used twin sai; Donatello, the tech wiz, boasted a bo staff; and Michelangelo, the jokester, swung nunchaku.
#12 The Simpsons Arcade Game
This side-scrolling beat ’em up by Konami wasn’t your typical arcade game. It allowed up to four players to control the entire Simpson family – Homer, Marge, Bart, and Lisa. Each character had their own unique attacks, with Homer utilizing his powerful fists, Marge swatting enemies with her purse, Bart using his trusty slingshot, and Lisa kicking and jumping with surprising agility. The Simpsons must battle through a comical recreation of Springfield, facing off against waves of enemies like Sideshow Bob, Krusty the Clown (under hypnosis!), and even itchy & Scratchy.
#13 Golden Axe
Developed by Sega, Golden Axe offered a thrilling blend of fantasy and beat ’em up action. Players took control of one of three powerful characters: Ax Battler, a barbarian wielding a double-bladed axe; Tyris Flare, a female Amazon warrior armed with a short sword and shield; and Gilius Thunderhead, a dwarf who fought with punches and kicks. Each character had unique strengths and weaknesses, making it strategic to choose the right fighter for the situation.
