6 Things To Do Before Checking Out of a Hotel Room

A two-minute final sweep can save a forgotten charger, prevent a surprise bill and make the trip home much easier.

Check Every Outlet

Walk around the room and unplug everything that belongs in the suitcase. Phone chargers, watches, earbuds and laptop adapters are easy to miss because they’re often tucked behind nightstands or desks.

Search the Bathroom

Do one deliberate sweep of the bathroom before closing the door. Toiletries, makeup, electric toothbrushes and medication can end up behind the sink, in a drawer or beside the shower.

Look Under the Bed

It sounds obvious, but luggage straps, shoes, children’s toys and other small items can disappear underneath furniture. A quick flashlight check takes seconds.

Check the Closet and Safe

Open the closet, safe and every drawer—even the ones that weren’t used much. These are among the easiest places to forget a wallet, passport, jewelry or an extra layer of clothing.

Check the Mini-Fridge

Look inside before leaving, especially if food or medication was stored there. It is much easier to discover something is missing while still in the room than after reaching the airport.

Take a Final Photo

A quick photo of the room can help confirm that nothing was left behind and provide a visual reminder of what the room looked like. It can also be useful if a later billing question arises.
