Some lessons in life are easy ones, but the most valuable lessons are often learned when we wish we knew them earlier than we did.
Nobody is coming

Sometimes rescue does come, but you can’t spend your whole life waiting around for someone to save you. Other people have their own issues, obligations, and priorities. Eventually you are going to have to pick up the phone, walk away, learn the skill, save up the money, or take that first scary step all by yourself.
Some doors stay closed

They say if you fail, try harder next time. But life doesn’t always work that way. Some doors close due to timing, opportunity, age, competition or decisions you made decades ago. Learn when to quit trying to open one door so you won’t miss the one that’s open for you.
The clock doesn’t negotiate

We put things off as if we will magically have the same health, freedom, energy, and opportunities five years from now. Time doesn’t stand still until you’re good and ready. That trip, conversation, career change, or afternoon with your parents may not be an option someday.
Being good isn’t enough

You can be kind, loyal, hardworking, honest and still be treated unfairly. Life doesn’t work like that. You don’t always get rewarded for good behavior. Character is important for who it makes you be, not because the universe eventually compensates you for it.
They aren’t thinking about you

That stupid thing you said, that awkward thing you wore, or that mistake you can’t stop thinking about likely consumes much less mental space in other people’s minds than you think. Most people are too concerned with themselves to notice. It’s kind of liberating to realize: you could have been spending your whole life trying to please a crowd that never gave attention.
Love doesn’t fix everything

Two people can love each other with all their hearts and still be wrong for each other. Whether it’s conflicting values, incompatible visions of the future, addiction, chronic dishonesty, financial disputes or lack of communication skills, realities can crush even the strongest emotions. Sometimes walking away is proof that you loved someone; it just proves that love alone isn’t enough to make life work.
Your body keeps the score

It’s convenient to push sleep, exercise, food, dental care, alcohol, and stress off on your future self. Some problems build up slowly over years before you notice. There’s no way to avoid all sickness or aging, but sacrificing your health because you feel good now will catch up to you, and it’s a bad deal.
Some apologies never arrive

You may know with every fiber of your being that someone wronged you, lied to you, or hurt you. They may never apologize for it, though. Hoping they’ll one day realize what they did can allow them to stay in your life long after they’ve physically removed themselves from it. Sometimes you have to find closure without that magical apology you know you deserve.
Talent can be wasted

Just because you’re naturally smart, creative, pretty, athletic, or talented doesn’t mean you have it made. Someone who is half your talent but twice as consistent will leave you in the dust. There are millions of talented people sitting around waiting for their big break while others who aren’t as talented just show up day after day.
People outgrow each other

Not all friendships are meant to fit all seasons of your life. The person who clicked with you at 22 might have little to talk about with you at 42. Sometimes no one stabbed anyone in the back. Two lives just grew apart, and trying to force that old intimacy can hurt more than letting go.
Money does matter

Money won’t buy happiness, love, health or a life of meaning. But acting like money isn’t important is foolish too. It can buy security, options, health care, education, time and your way out of some bad situations. Budgeting isn’t being greedy; it’s just one form of insurance for your future freedom.
You teach people what you’ll accept

Allowing disrespectful behavior over and over again while thinking someone will someday see how patient you are can backfire. Boundaries in your head are not boundaries at all. Occasionally the harsh consequence, firm “no”, or walking away is exactly what will let them know how you want to be treated.
They won’t always be there

If you’re lucky enough to still have parents or older relatives who adore you, it’s easy to believe there will always be another birthday, phone call, holiday, visit. There won’t be. The questions you left unasked and stories left unheard can be lost forever when they’re gone. That’s why moments of mundane togetherness can be more precious than they seem right now.
Right choices can be painful

We’d like to believe that regret means we made the wrong choice. But sometimes every option has a loss. You can leave a relationship that’s going nowhere and still love that person. You can choose a better career and still wonder about the path not taken. You can move to a new city and mourn your old life. A good choice won’t always feel good in the moment. And sometimes waiting for a decision with no regrets will leave you paralyzed forever.
