The World’s Biggest Companies Are Quietly Buying Their Own Electricity

As electricity demand soars, major companies are increasingly securing power directly instead of simply relying on the grid.

1. Google Is Buying Geothermal Power
In September 2026, Google agreed to buy 396 megawatts of geothermal electricity from Fervo Energy’s Cape Station project in Utah. Google can potentially expand the deal to nearly 1 gigawatt, giving its future data centers a source of power that operates around the clock. (Reuters)

2. Meta Has Contracted More Than 30 Gigawatts
Meta says it has contracted for more than 30 GW of clean and renewable energy worldwide. Its deals include solar farms paired with large battery systems, helping supply the enormous electricity needs of its data centers. (Meta Sustainability)

3. Amazon Is One of the Biggest Buyers
Amazon has become one of the world’s largest corporate purchasers of renewable energy, signing agreements for wind and solar projects across multiple countries. In 2025, Amazon and Meta together accounted for 20.4 GW of newly contracted clean power. (Data Center Dynamics)

4. Microsoft Is Doing It Too
Microsoft is signing long-term agreements for renewable electricity to support its growing cloud and AI infrastructure. These contracts help developers finance enormous new power projects while giving Microsoft greater certainty over future electricity supplies.

5. Data Centers Are Driving the Rush
AI has dramatically increased the amount of electricity required by data centers. S&P Global says Amazon, Google, Meta and Microsoft signed 16,777 MW of renewable contracts in 2025, roughly 80% of all corporate renewable contracts tracked in its data. (S&P Global)

6. Companies Aren’t Just Buying Solar Anymore
The newest deals increasingly include geothermal, nuclear, batteries and other firm power sources because solar and wind aren’t available every hour. The goal is shifting from simply buying “green electricity” to securing enough reliable power to keep massive facilities running continuously.
