Travel is shifting away from packed itineraries and toward trips that leave more time to actually enjoy a place.
1. Longer Stays in Fewer Places
Instead of checking off several destinations, travellers are spending more time in one area.
A slower schedule can mean exploring neighbourhoods, eating locally, and discovering places that never appear on a typical tourist itinerary.
2. Small Towns Are Getting More Attention
Major cities are no longer the automatic choice for every trip.
KAYAK’s 2026 travel research found that 84% of surveyed younger travellers would rather visit a rural area or smaller city than a major hub.
3. Short Trips Can Still Be Slow
Slow travel does not necessarily mean taking weeks off work.
Weekend getaways and short breaks can leave plenty of room for relaxed mornings, fewer activities, and spontaneous plans.
4. Scenic Journeys Are Part of the Experience
For some travellers, getting there is becoming part of the vacation.
Scenic train rides, road trips, ferries, and other slower forms of transportation can turn the journey itself into something worth remembering.
5. Nature Is Replacing the Crowded Checklist
Parks, beaches, mountains, and quieter outdoor destinations are increasingly appealing to travellers looking for space.
KAYAK found that 63% of surveyed travellers said natural wonders would help guide their 2026 travel plans.
6. Doing Less Is Becoming the Point
The biggest change may be psychological.
Instead of trying to see everything, travellers are choosing fewer activities, longer meals, relaxed mornings, and time with no schedule at all.
