1. Parasite Broke a Hollywood Barrier
Bong Joon Ho’s South Korean thriller became a worldwide phenomenon in 2019.
It won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and became the first non-English-language movie to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Its success showed that subtitles were no longer necessarily a barrier to mainstream audiences.
2. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Became an American Hit
Ang Lee’s Mandarin-language martial-arts epic became one of the most successful foreign-language films ever released in the United States.
The 2000 film earned more than $200 million worldwide and received 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.
3. RRR Turned an Indian Film Into a Global Event
The 2022 Indian action epic RRR found a huge international audience after its release.
Its spectacular action sequences and musical numbers helped it travel far beyond India, while “Naatu Naatu” won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
4. Train to Busan Made Korean Horror a Global Favorite
The 2016 South Korean zombie thriller became an international cult hit.
Its combination of fast-paced horror, emotional characters, and social commentary helped it break through to audiences well beyond South Korea.
5. Ne Zha 2 Became a Box-Office Giant
China’s 2025 animated blockbuster Ne Zha 2 became one of the highest-grossing films in history.
It has earned more than $2.2 billion worldwide, with roughly 99% of its revenue coming from China. Guinness World Records lists it as the highest-grossing animated film.
6. Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Became a Global Anime Event
The Japanese animated film Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle became an extraordinary international box-office success.
Its worldwide total passed hundreds of millions of dollars, with international markets accounting for most of its earnings. It demonstrated just how powerful anime has become outside Japan.
