Some disasters did more than destroy lives and communities. Their effects reached science, government, culture, and everyday life far beyond where they happened.

1. Mount Tambora, Indonesia — 1815

Tambora’s enormous eruption sent volcanic material high into the atmosphere, cooling temperatures across much of the Northern Hemisphere.

The following year became known as the “Year Without a Summer,” bringing crop failures, food shortages, and famine. The gloomy weather also helped inspire Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

2. The Great Smog of London — 1952

A combination of coal smoke, cold weather, and stagnant air created a deadly blanket over London.

Up to 12,000 people ultimately died. The disaster helped trigger Britain’s Clean Air Acts and decades of new air-pollution controls.

3. The Halifax Explosion — 1917

A collision involving a French cargo ship carrying explosives devastated Halifax, killing about 2,000 people and injuring thousands more.

The catastrophe transformed emergency response and disaster relief in Canada, while also strengthening Halifax’s connection with Boston, whose residents sent major assistance after the explosion.

4. The Great Molasses Flood — 1919

A storage tank in Boston suddenly ruptured, releasing about 2.3 million gallons of molasses into the city’s North End.

The disaster killed 21 people and led to a landmark legal case. The company’s liability helped reinforce the importance of professional engineering review and stronger construction oversight.

5. The Lisbon Earthquake — 1755

A massive earthquake, followed by a tsunami and fires, devastated Lisbon on November 1, 1755.

The destruction prompted new approaches to earthquake-resistant construction and influenced European debates about science, religion, and government responsibility.

6. The Climate Catastrophe of 536

A volcanic eruption in the sixth century filled the atmosphere with particles that dimmed sunlight across large parts of the Northern Hemisphere.

Temperatures fell sharply, harvests suffered, and famine followed. Another major eruption around 539 or 540 intensified the disruption, contributing to a period of extraordinary hardship.
