The modern world is built from materials most people barely notice. A few ordinary substances sit underneath our buildings, roads, electronics, and food systems.

It is a basic ingredient in concrete, asphalt, glass, and other products used to build cities. The OECD describes sand and silicates as essential building blocks of modern life and among the world’s most widely used solid resources.

Concrete is arguably the defining material of modern cities.
It forms apartment towers, bridges, dams, tunnels, sidewalks, and foundations. Global concrete production reached roughly 26 billion tonnes per year by 2020—an extraordinary amount for a material most people rarely think about.
3. Asphalt
Asphalt quietly connects modern economies.
Roads, airport runways, parking areas, and highways depend on it. Because roads cover such enormous areas, asphalt has become one of the world’s major stock-building materials alongside concrete and other construction minerals.
4. Copper
Copper is the metal hiding inside modern electrification.
It carries electricity through power grids, buildings, motors, appliances, and electronics. As societies use more electricity, copper remains difficult to replace because of its excellent conductivity.
5. Glass
Glass is much more than windows.
It appears in bottles, buildings, lenses, screens, laboratory equipment, and solar technology. High-quality silica is also important to electronics and communications, giving an ancient material a surprisingly modern role.
6. Fertilizer Minerals
Modern agriculture depends on minerals containing nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.
These nutrients allow farmers to produce much larger harvests than natural soil fertility alone would support. In other words, some of the world’s most important food-production infrastructure begins with ordinary minerals extracted from the ground.
