Some countries spent centuries becoming wealthy and influential. Others achieved in a few decades what normally takes generations, transforming themselves so quickly that the rest of the world struggled to keep up.
1. South Korea
In the 1950s, South Korea was one of the poorest countries in the world following the Korean War. Within a few decades it became a global leader in technology, automobiles, shipbuilding, and electronics. Today companies like Samsung and Hyundai are recognized worldwide.
2. Singapore
When Singapore became independent in 1965, many doubted it could survive without natural resources or a large domestic market. Instead, it built an economy around trade, finance, manufacturing, and logistics, eventually becoming one of the richest countries on Earth.
3. China
China’s economic transformation after the late 1970s was one of the largest and fastest in history. Hundreds of millions of people entered the middle class as the country became the manufacturing center of the world.
4. Qatar
Large natural gas reserves transformed Qatar from a relatively poor Gulf state into one of the world’s wealthiest countries on a per-person basis in just a few decades.
5. The United Arab Emirates
Oil revenues helped launch the UAE’s growth, but cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi expanded into aviation, finance, logistics, and tourism. Today the economy extends far beyond energy exports.
6. Ireland
Ireland spent much of the twentieth century as one of Western Europe’s poorer economies. Foreign investment, technology companies, and favorable business policies helped transform it into one of Europe’s fastest-growing economies during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.
