9 habits that often reduce day-to-day happiness

We all wish to be happy but sometimes we allow ourselves to get in the way and don’t even realize it. It’s tempting to engage in behaviors that are initially innocent. But gradually, they wear away at our well-being and joy.

The tricky thing is, we don’t really realize the consequences of these habits on our everyday experiences. Once we notice these patterns, we can begin to alter them for a happier & more rewarding life. This is a list of common behaviors that are making you feel awful and how you can start changing.

Constantly Comparing Yourself to Others

The pressure to compare yourself to others is an inevitability these days, but it can steal your joy. When you compare yourself to others or what they’ve accomplished, you may feel that you are not up to the mark. This can make you fixate on what you feel you are not good at, rather than how great you are.

This is a pattern that over time lowers your self-esteem and leaves you less content with your life.

Not Setting Boundaries

Saying “yes” when you ought to be saying “no” makes you stressed out. If you always prioritize the needs of other people over your own, you might get stretched too thin. You need boundaries, otherwise it can lead to burnout & resentment.

Holding Grudges

If you’re angry or resentful about what happened in the past, you’ll stay stuck in a negative state of mind. Holding a grudge keeps the wound open. That can drain your energy and make it difficult to look forward to what is good in your life.

Focusing on Negativity

We are so quick to get stuck on the negative instead of the positive. If you’re imagining the worst or obsessively focusing on the wrong things, it can turn your life upside down.

That negative attention can obscure the good stuff, even when it exists. This can lead to a vicious circle of negativity.

Overloading Yourself with Responsibilities

Doing too much all at once will create feelings of overwhelm & stress. It’s hard to make time for yourself when you’re in a rush. You can get exhausted and feel unhappy. Know when you’re working too hard  and when to ask yourself to slow down.

Neglecting Self-Care

Not looking after your body and mind will lead to many negative things; ranging from being worn out and slow to stressed & anxious. Even little things such as sleeping enough, eating well and laying down can have a major impact on your day to day life.

Living in the Past

If you replay regrets or failures from the past, it will keep you stuck in a pattern of regret. It makes it hard to live in the moment or anticipate the future. This fixation on the past can also deprive you of enjoying where you are now.

Fear of Failure

You can’t take risks and try something, because you fear failure. If you’re scared to fail, then you might simply prefer what you have, even if it doesn’t feel good. You become stagnant because of that fear. It stops you from making new moves that would make you happy & fulfilled.

Seeking Validation from Others

Needing approval from others makes your happiness dependent on them. Constantly looking for validation means you will be afraid or insecure when you don’t get what you want. This attitude can make you struggle to feel really happy with yourself. And in the long run, this desire to please will wear away at your confidence.
