6 Times the World Nearly Ran Out of Something Essential

Shortages can expose how dependent the world is on a surprisingly small number of mines, farms, factories, and trade routes. Some past crises came dangerously close to disrupting supplies that entire societies depended on.

1. Quinine During World War II

When Japan captured Southeast Asian territories in 1942, Allied access to Java’s quinine supplies was suddenly cut off.

Quinine was one of the most important treatments for malaria at the time. The shortage forced the Allies to expand alternative supplies and develop synthetic antimalarial drugs.

2. Rubber After the Fall of Southeast Asia

The same wartime expansion cut Allied access to much of the world’s natural rubber production.

Rubber was essential for tires, military equipment, vehicles, and industrial goods. Governments responded by expanding synthetic rubber production on an enormous scale.

3. Saltpeter Before Synthetic Nitrogen

For centuries, saltpeter was essential for both fertilizer and gunpowder.

By the early 20th century, dependence on natural nitrate deposits had become a major concern. The development of industrial nitrogen fixation eventually reduced the world’s dependence on those deposits.

4. Helium

Helium is difficult to replace in certain scientific and medical applications, including cooling the powerful magnets used in MRI machines.

Supply concerns have repeatedly raised fears of shortages because usable helium is concentrated in a relatively small number of underground deposits.

5. IV Saline

In 2017, Hurricane Maria damaged a major manufacturing hub in Puerto Rico.

Because a huge share of U.S. hospitals’ IV saline supply came from the island, the disaster quickly created shortages across the country.

6. Strategic Metals During Wartime

During World War II, governments realized that losing access to relatively obscure materials such as tin, manganese, chromite, and rubber could disrupt entire military industries.

The United States responded by creating strategic stockpiles, a system that still exists in modified form today.
