Some people who later became giants of art, science, literature, and music received little recognition during their lifetimes. Their reputations grew only after their work was rediscovered.
1. Vincent van Gogh
Van Gogh sold very few paintings during his lifetime and remained largely unknown outside a small circle.
After his death in 1890, his sister-in-law Johanna van Gogh-Bonger worked to promote his paintings and letters. His reputation grew dramatically, eventually making him one of the most influential artists in Western history.
2. Franz Kafka
Kafka published only a small portion of his writing and was not widely known when he died in 1924.
He had asked his friend Max Brod to destroy his unpublished manuscripts. Brod ignored the request and published works including The Trial and The Castle, helping establish Kafka as a major 20th-century writer.
3. Gregor Mendel
Mendel’s experiments with pea plants established fundamental principles of heredity.
He published his findings in 1866, but they attracted little attention. Around 1900, three scientists independently rediscovered his work, leading to his recognition as a founder of modern genetics.
4. Emily Dickinson
Dickinson wrote nearly 1,800 poems but published only a small number during her lifetime.
After her death in 1886, her sister Lavinia discovered the manuscripts and helped bring them to publication. Dickinson eventually became one of America’s most celebrated poets.
5. Nikola Tesla
Tesla made major contributions to electrical engineering but died in 1943 after years of financial difficulty and declining public attention.
His reputation grew substantially after his death, and his work on alternating-current systems became central to the history of electricity.
6. Johann Sebastian Bach
Bach was respected during his lifetime, particularly as an organist, but his compositions later fell out of fashion.
A 19th-century revival—especially Felix Mendelssohn’s 1829 performance of the St. Matthew Passion—helped restore Bach’s reputation as one of history’s greatest composers.
