5 reasons you should block him immediately & 5 signs he’s worth a chance

Dating becomes much easier when you know which red flag behaviors mean you should walk away, and which ones hint at a keeper.

Block him: Notice the common enemy

Pay attention to how he speaks of past girlfriends. If every woman he ever dated was crazy, obsessed, jealous, manipulative or completely at fault for the breakup, there’s a gap in his story.

Sure, many relationships can end poorly, but someone who can’t recall one fault of his own might have an issue with introspection. Someday you’ll likely find that you’ve become his newest scapegoat to blame everyone else.

Affection becomes leverage

He starts off bombarding you with attention: endless texts, outrageous promises, intense compliments and discussions of marriage or commitment almost right away. Then he withdraws affection when you don’t do what he wants.

Trying too hard isn’t necessarily manipulation. But love that is cyclically given as a reward and taken away as punishment is unhealthy. Healthy attention should thrill you without making you feel manipulated, controlled, or scared of letting someone down.

Respect disappears in private

He can be sweet with friends and insanely courteous on dates. Notice how he acts when he knows no one’s looking.

Nitpicking, degradation behind humor, all-out criticism, or trying to turn you against your friends is not okay just because he’s nice to you at other times. You don’t have to wait for somebody to turn into a total monster before you know enough is enough.

Tiny tests

He waits to see if you’ll text him back twice. He brings up another girl to see how jealous you’ll get. He cancels on plans to see how you react, or else he goes distant for a while because he wants to see if you’ll pursue him.

Guys will try to justify these little tests as game strategy, but really they only create unnecessary insecurity. If a person is interested in learning about you, they’ll ask you straight up instead of laying emotional landmines and judging your reaction.

Confusion follows conversations

You joined the discussion clearly understanding what upset you. Twenty minutes later, you’re apologizing and unable to articulate how you arrived there. The initial problem has been lost under technicalities, blanket statements unrelated to the situation at hand, and debates over your choice of words.

One frustrating debate isn’t the end of the world. But if you find yourself regularly losing the thread of what you were angry about in the first place, talking may be less about solving problems and more about wearing you down into submission.

Worth a Chance: The detail that stuck

You casually mention to him that you never really liked roses even though you’ve gotten them before, or that you dislike when he calls you a certain pet name. He remembers weeks later without you having to mention it again. This isn’t the same as learning cool trivia about you.

Correcting small details isn’t really romantic, and that’s why it’s important. It means he’s adjusting his mental version of you to match the real you, not just carrying on a relationship with who he thought you were.

No need to remind you

You say something awkward, misinterpret a pun, stumble with your words, or launch into a tale with no punchline. He doesn’t harp on it or make that your new pet name. He lets it go.

Small gestures like that can say a lot about someone’s social kindness. Someone who cares about you shouldn’t always have to milk a chance to embarrass you for all its worth, particularly if it’ll make you self-conscious.

When nobody’s watching

Notice the decent things you accidentally discover about him. Maybe someone tells you he visits an elderly family member regularly, helped a friend out of debt without their knowing it, or found something expensive and returned it. He never boasted about it because he doesn’t want to impress an audience.

Doing good deeds doesn’t make you any more authentic if no one is there to see them. But if he can be kind when no one is applauding, you know more about what kind of good guy he is than he could tell you in words.

Getting to know more

You know a lot more about something than he does, but he doesn’t try to one-up you or dominate the conversation. He asks questions and allows you to teach him. He might even just outright admit, “You know more about this than I do.” That’s actually telling.

The fact that a person is secure enough in who they are that they can allow their partner to be smarter, better, or more experienced in something means they won’t view the relationship as one big competition for who’s superior.

You notice that you stopped forwarding screenshots of conversations to your friends, asking “What do you think he meant by this?” His communication may be far from flawless, but for the most part you know where you stand.

There are no random disappearances followed by days of love bombs, intentionally unclear invitations, or games played over social media to elicit a response.
