5 Halloween Dangers Every Pet Owner Should Know

Halloween is a minefield for curious pets. The ASPCA’s poison control experts flag these five risks every October.

Chocolate

Chocolate contains theobromine, which dogs and cats process far more slowly than people do. The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous: unsweetened baking chocolate carries nearly seven times the theobromine of milk chocolate, and as little as a quarter ounce can sicken a 10-pound dog.

Xylitol

This sweetener hides in sugar-free candy and gum. In dogs, even small amounts can trigger a life-threatening blood sugar crash, seizures, and liver damage.

Candy Wrappers

Foil and cellophane wrappers smell like treats but can cause vomiting and intestinal blockages. Dispose of them where pets cannot reach.

Candles and Decorations

Flickering jack-o’-lanterns and dangling decorations invite burns and chewing accidents. The ASPCA advises keeping pets away from open flames and small chewable decor.

The Open Door

Trick-or-treaters mean a door swinging open all night. Keep pets in a quiet room to prevent door-dashing and to spare anxious animals the commotion.
