Ever walked into the grocery store with a long list and left with a few impulse buys that cost a small fortune? Yeah, me too. A lot of the stuff in your shopping cart looks totally harmless, but all those little “convenience” buys and so-called “treats” start to add up, and they are way more expensive than they need to be. Here are 17 overpriced items that are draining your wallet.

Avocado mash cups

Okay, they are convenient and kind of cute. But you’re paying triple the cost just so you don’t have to mash an avocado in your kitchen. Pick up a ripe avocado and squeeze a little lime on it. Done in 30 seconds.
Cold-pressed juice bottles

They look healthy and trendy, but some of these cost $7 or more for a single bottle. It’s just juice without the fiber, and way overpriced for something that disappears in two gulps.
Flavored nut butters

Cinnamon almond butter with sea salt? Sounds pretty good. But the markup is insane. A regular, no-frills jar of peanut butter and a little creativity in your kitchen will get you almost as far for a fraction of the cost.
Cheese boards in plastic trays

Those pre-made charcuterie trays at the grocery store deli counter are a grab-and-go miracle. But they can cost $15–20, just for six crackers and four baby cheese cubes. Making your own with a block of cheese and some crackers is so much better.
Zoodles (Zucchini Noodles)

Pre-spiralized noodles in plastic tubs look healthy, but they cost 3x as much as whole zucchini. You can buy a spiralizer (or even a peeler) and make your own in 5 minutes.
Ready-to-eat overnight oats

They cost $3–$4 a jar at the store, and all they really are is oats, milk, and fruit left in the fridge overnight. You can make five at home for the price of one.
Fancy ice cubes

We’re not kidding. Some stores now sell “slow-melting cocktail ice” or even flavored ice cubes. It’s water that’s been frozen. Save your money, buy a tray, and do it yourself.
Pre-boiled eggs

You will NOT believe how much they charge for eggs that are already hard-boiled and peeled. A dozen regular eggs cost half as much, and you can boil them yourself in 10 minutes.
Fruit Sushi Trays

We’re talking those colorful dessert trays in the produce section that mix fruit and rice for a sweet “sushi” vibe. Cute, right? But they cost more than fresh fruit salad most of the time. You’re not really paying for fruit, you’re paying for the Instagrammable packaging.
Watermelon chunks

Pre-cut watermelon cubes and chunks cost twice (or more) as much per pound as a whole watermelon. Slice one open with a knife and you’ll save big.
Smoothie packs in freezer aisle

Frozen smoothie packs in the freezer aisle look like a great time-saver for busy mornings. But you’re literally paying for chopped frozen fruit in a bag. Buy your own fruit, chop it, freeze it, and you’ve got the exact same thing for a fraction of the price.
Store-bought trail mix with candy

Those “healthy” mixes often have more chocolate and candy than nuts, but still cost more than just a plain old bag of nuts. Make your own trail mix and skip the sugar crash.
Bottled salad dressing (trendy flavors)

Brand-new salad dressings with “avocado-lime-sriracha-kombucha vinaigrette” have ridiculous prices. Mix oil, vinegar, and some seasoning at home, and you’ll be just as fancy.
Bottled cold brew coffee

Yep, that single bottle of cold brew in the cooler can cost as much as an entire bag of ground coffee. Brew up a batch in the French press and stick it in the fridge. All week of cold coffee for the cost of one.
Pre-portioned snack cheese

Tiny packs of cheese cubes or even baby cheese rounds are cute. But they are way overpriced. Buying a full block and cutting your own at home saves money AND gives you more cheese.
Edible flower packs

They look fancy on a salad or a cake, but those little plastic tubs of edible flowers cost $10 or more. Let’s be real, most of us just end up staring at them and forget to use them before they wilt. They’re not really a necessity.
Pre-portioned butter pats or “butter medallions”

Some stores have started selling little discs or even fanciful shapes of butter. It’s literally the exact same butter as in the regular block, just cut into pretty shapes and way more expensive. Slice your own and save the money for real upgrades, like a good loaf of bread.
