Growing old is inevitable, but sometimes our own daily habits make the aging process faster, without us even realizing it. It’s in the small decisions: what you eat and drink, how you sleep or even how you sit in a chair. The habits we develop add up, making us appear older than our actual age.
We talked to a few people about the habits they’ve noticed in themselves and others, and it turns out there are some patterns. So here are 11 daily habits that quietly make people look older than they really are.

Not drinking enough water

People often make it through the day sipping coffee or soda but rarely drinking water. Dehydration makes skin look dull and dry, highlighting wrinkles. It’s amazing how a few extra glasses a day restore some of that luster.
Sitting all day without moving

Staring at the computer or TV for a long time makes one hunch their shoulders and back. As a result, one’s body stiffens, and one’s posture weakens. Even stretching a few times every hour can help with this.
Eating processed foods every day

Daily fast food or sugary snacks taste good in the moment but quietly damage the skin. Too much sugar breaks down collagen, which keeps skin firm. The result is earlier sagging and wrinkles.
Drinking through straws all the time

It feels like a small habit, but the repeated puckering around straws creates lines around the mouth. Over the years, those little creases become permanent. It’s basically the same motion smoking causes.
Always sleeping on the same side

When someone sleeps on one side of their face every night, the pressure creates little creases in the skin. Do it every day for years, and those “sleep lines” stick around. A silk pillowcase or changing positions can help prevent them.
Overusing makeup daily

Putting on a full face of heavy makeup day after day may backfire. Makeup can sink into fine lines and make them more noticeable instead of concealing them. Allowing the skin to breathe makes a big difference.
Constantly squinting at screens

Phones and computers are so much a part of modern life but only a few people take steps to protect themselves from staring at them all day. Bright screens and improper posture lead people to squint, which over time deepens crow’s feet and forehead lines.
Forgetting moisturizer

Many people wash their face but skip moisturizer, thinking they don’t need it. Dry skin shows wrinkles faster and loses its natural shine. A quick daily application keeps skin softer and fresher-looking.
Overplucking eyebrows

Tweezing a little every day eventually thins out brows more than intended. Sparse brows instantly age the face, since fuller brows are linked to youthfulness. Unfortunately, once overplucked, some hairs never grow back.
Talking on the phone between ear and shoulder

Holding the phone this way is a daily habit for a lot of people at work or home. But that constant strain causes posture problems and deep lines in the neck. It’s one of those little things that quietly ages you.
Ignoring the neck and chest in skincare

Most people stop skincare at the chin, forgetting the neck and chest entirely. These areas show sun damage and wrinkles just as fast as the face. Daily neglect here gives away age, even when the face looks youthful.
