10 popular diets I tried and regretted so you don’t have to

Oh, the things I’ve tried to drop a few pounds. Unfortunately, not all diets are great. Let’s look at my experience with ten popular diets that sounded great at first but ended up being a bit of a letdown.

Keto

Going keto meant waving goodbye to carbs and saying hello to fats. It started well with some quick weight loss but it got tough.

I couldn’t enjoy a casual pizza night with friends and I found myself dreaming about a good old sandwich.  Plus, not having fruits or whole grains started to feel really restrictive. It just wasn’t something I could stick with.

Paleo

Paleo sounded cool because it involves eating like our ancestors; that means no processed food (great) but also no dairy or grains.

Initially, it felt healthy but after a while, I realized I was struggling without these foods. My energy levels were down, especially after workouts. I really missed having a bowl of cereal or yogurt.

I gave the vegan diet a whirl for ethical reasons and the apparent health benefits. However, it was hard because I had to read every food label, which was a real hassle.

Worst of all, dining out became extremely difficult. Most restaurants had limited options and I needed to plan a lot more for this diet.

Atkins

Atkins is another low-carb diet but you can eat more protein, so I thought it would be easier than keto. Unfortunately, it still felt unbalanced with so much meat and fat and after a few weeks, I felt sluggish.

I started to really crave fruits and a simple slice of toast. Cooking separate meals from what my family ate was no fun either.

Zone

The Zone diet tries to balance carbs, fats and proteins in a 40:30:30 ratio; yes, it’s as scientific as it sounds.

Measuring every meal was too much math for me because I wanted to lose weight without taking a math quiz every time I ate. It became tedious quickly & I lost the motivation to keep it up.

Raw

Eating raw as part of the raw fruit diet was great during the summer; lots of fresh salads.

But as the weather turned, the last thing I wanted was a cold dinner and the amount of time it took to prepare raw meals was also a real drag.

Who knew how time-consuming chopping and blending could actually be when you’re hungry?

Mediterranean

I loved the foods in the Mediterranean diet, which included nuts, fish, olive oil and vegetables, although it was too laid-back for weight loss.

Sure, it’s great for heart health yet without stricter rules, I often started overeating. It’s easy to have a little too much olive oil or one too many nuts.

Weight Watchers

The idea of counting points with Weight Watchers is that it was meant to steer me towards healthier choices. And yes, it taught me about food values.

But I got tired of logging everything I ate and obsessing over my daily points. It sucked the joy out of meals. Each bite became a numbers game and that’s never good.

South Beach

As part of the South Beach diet, you have three phases and each one has different dietary restrictions. Just when I got the hang of one phase, it was time to switch.

This seriously messed with my routine and a lack of consistency made it hard for me to adapt.

Detox

Detox diets promised quick results, mostly through liquids & minimal solid food. It certainly worked at first.

Soon enough, I felt weak and dizzy a lot. Once I stopped the detox, the weight came right back, meaning that it just didn’t feel like an effective way to manage my weight in the long run.
