10 Ways Society Discriminates Against Women

Sometimes it feels like we’ve come a long way with gender equality—and in many ways, we have. But scratch the surface and you’ll see that society still isn’t giving women a fair deal. Whether it’s the way they’re represented in movies or the extra cash they pay for pink razors, discrimination is all around us. Here are ten ways women face discrimination today.

Gender Bias in Job Descriptions

Words like “rockstar” or “ninja” aside, a lot of job adverts use language that’s subtly coded male. Think “aggressive” or “dominant”—words that’ll make many women pause before pressing ‘apply.’ Essentially, it’s a way to narrow the field that makes certain jobs seem like boys’ clubs right from the get-go.

Unequal Household Expectations

Even when both partners work full-time, women often end up doing the lion’s share of housework & childcare. And it’s all thanks to the invisible rulebook that says dishes and diapers are women’s work! This extra work eats into women’s free time while making it harder for them to focus on their careers.

The “Pink Tax”

Have you ever compared the cost of a razor for women with one for men? Chances are, the pink one costs more—even though they do the exact same job. That’s the Pink Tax. Being a woman suddenly makes everyday products more expensive and it seriously adds up over time. They shouldn’t have to pay for their gender!

Representation in Media

Turn on the TV or flip through a magazine & you’ll see women often miss out or are pigeonholed into certain roles. When we do see women, they’re shown in a way that’s focused on looking good rather than being smart or strong. This sends a message about what society values in women—not their brains or bravery.

Healthcare Bias

Doctors tend to take women’s health concerns less seriously than they do with men. For example, they’re often told it’s “all in your head” or may even have their symptoms dismissed entirely. Women are less likely to receive pain medication or be taken seriously when they report pain. Either way, many women struggle to get the care they need and this leads to worse health outcomes.

Professional Networking Challenges

Climbing the career ladder is difficult—especially when the rungs seem designed for someone else. Professional networks & events are usually unwelcoming or outright dismissive towards women. As such, it’s far harder for them to find mentors & make connections that could help them succeed in their careers.

Dress Code Double Standards

Dress codes are a nightmare for women. Too formal, too casual, too much, too little—it’s impossible to get right. And while men get by with the simple shirt-and-pants combo, women face a laundry list of rules about what’s “appropriate.” Essentially, it’s a way of policing women’s bodies & choices despite being illegal.

Safety Concerns in Public Spaces

Most women don’t even think twice about holding their keys in their hands as they walk alone at night & constantly look over their shoulders. It’s a risk calculation that men often don’t have to consider. The need to always be on guard affects women’s mental health, freedom & even career choices because they might deem some opportunities too risky.

The Gender Wage Gap

On average, women earn less than men for doing the same job and this gap is even wider for women of color. The reasons behind this gap are complicated since they involve all kinds of discrimination & the undervaluation of work traditionally done by women. If that wasn’t bad enough, women also face barriers to higher-paying roles.

Bias in Education and STEM Fields

From a young age, parents & teachers steer girls away from science & math. STEM subjects (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) are stereotyped as “male” fields in a way that’s rather harmful. We actively discourage talented women from pursuing careers in these areas—even though we’d all benefit from women doing them.
