The idea behind gun control laws is pretty straightforward—making communities safer by regulating who can get their hands on firearms. But as with anything in life, it’s not always that simple. In fact, some people believe that tightening gun laws could do the opposite of what they’re meant to do and cause an increase in crime. Here are 10 ways this could actually happen.

Black Market Boom

For starters, people who really want a gun might just skip the legal route and go straight to the black market. There, sellers don’t care about laws or background checks—which makes it perfect for criminals to arm themselves. That’s the exact opposite of what stricter laws are trying to achieve!
Good Guys Unarmed

When it’s harder to get a gun legally, the average Joe or Jane who wants one for protection will likely be out of luck. Meanwhile, those with ill intent aren’t going to let a thing like the law stop them. Such an imbalance will give criminals more confidence. They know their potential victims are less likely to fight back and are thus more likely to hurt them.
Bold Burglars

Similarly, when burglars know that the chances of walking into an armed house are low, they’re tempted to break in. The deterrent of a homeowner with a gun disappears with stricter gun control. The risk-to-reward ratio looks far more appealing to someone looking to make a quick score. As such, reducing guns could actually make homes less safe.
DIY Dangers

With gun laws in full force, some people might get crafty by modifying legal guns into something a bit more sinister. They might even make their own. Sadly, DIY firearms are hard to trace & are often more dangerous than standard-issue guns. The danger to the public is a lot higher when these unregulated weapons make their way onto the streets.
Alternative Arms

When getting a gun becomes too much of a hassle, people start looking for other ways to protect themselves or commit crimes. This could increase the number of unconventional weapons that aren’t covered by gun laws. That’s a whole new set of problems for law enforcement! Whether it’s crossbows or homemade explosives, the human capacity for creativity knows no bounds.
Criminals Change Tactics

Similarly, criminals are nothing if not adaptable so they’ll switch their methods to something that doesn’t need a firearm. For example, they might use knives or even commit acid attacks. Either way, a lack of guns may lead to different types of violent crimes that are just as harmful to communities. Removing guns from the equation doesn’t necessarily solve the problem of violence—it just changes the tools used to commit it.
Smuggler’s Delight

Tight gun laws in one place are a great opportunity for smugglers. They’ll happily bring in illegal firearms from places with looser laws to make a hefty profit & flood the area with weapons that law enforcement can’t track. Essentially, this completely undermines the local laws. For smugglers, the only concern is the bottom line. The local communities are the ones dealing with the consequences.
Silent Victims

In places where people feel safer owning a gun, stricter laws might make people hesitant to report crimes. They might fear becoming a target if it’s known they’re unarmed. As such, many crimes may go unreported & unchecked. Such silence creates a false sense of security in statistics—but the reality on the ground is much grimmer.
Police Puzzled

Enforcing strict gun laws takes a lot of resources & manpower, stretching law enforcement thin. It will likely divert attention from other crime-fighting efforts while also possibly causing an increased uptick in criminal activity. Law enforcement will have less time & fewer resources for community policing and drug enforcement. Worse still, officers will probably be swamped with paperwork—that’s never good for the community!
Community Cracks

When gun laws get stricter, it creates a rift between law enforcement & the people they serve, especially in places where gun ownership is a big part of the culture. It’s a breakdown in trust that makes it harder for police to do their job effectively. After all, people who feel like their way of life is under attack are less likely to cooperate with those enforcing the laws.
