Acapulco, Mexico

Once upon a time, Acapulco was the perfect place for celebs but sadly, it’s not glitz & glam anymore. Drug-related violence has soared in the city, turning it from a dreamy beach destination to somewhere tourists need to tread carefully. It’s a shame because those beaches are something else—but safety comes first. And right now, Acapulco doesn’t have a lot of it.

Caracas, Venezuela

Caracas is going through a tough time. Political unrest and economic troubles have hit Venezuela hard, making its capital a risky place for a casual visit. It’s even worse when you consider that basic goods are in short supply and the crime rate is through the roof. While it may be a city with a lot of heart, the challenges make it a no-go for tourists for the time being.

Over in Cape Town, the situation is a bit different. Instead of crime or unrest, it’s water that’s the issue—or the lack of it, as the city has dealt with severe droughts over the last few years. These have led to strict water usage rules that are a hassle for visitors & locals alike! As stunning as it may be, the water crisis has dampened its status as a tourist hotspot.

Cairo, Egypt

Cairo has had its share of headlines, which are mostly due to political upheaval and the city has seen better days in terms of stability. Of course, many parts are still welcoming to tourists. However, the unpredictability of politics & high rate of petty crime there means you have to stay on your toes—and keep an eye on the news.

Kashmir, India

Kashmir’s beauty is legendary and for good reason. Unfortunately, it’s also at the heart of a long-standing dispute between India and Pakistan, leading to tensions & conflict in the region. Things were better for a while, but terrorism is starting to heat up again. As you might expect, it’s not exactly an ideal vacation spot! It’s a complicated situation but one thing’s for sure—safety is a major concern.

Honduras

Honduras has some of the most beautiful islands you could hope to visit but the mainland tells a different story. The country struggles with one of the highest homicide rates globally – thanks to gang violence & drug trafficking. The government is working on improving things. Sadly, it’s still a place to avoid, at least for the near future.

Bangkok, Thailand

Let’s get one thing straight—Bangkok is one of the liveliest cities on the planet. Sadly, it’s also had its share of political unrest. Protests can pop up at any moment and these make certain parts of the city challenging for tourists. It’s still a fantastic place with so much to offer but if you’re thinking about visiting, you should check any advisories before going.

Naples, Italy

Naples is a stunning city, thanks to its incredible history & food that’s absolutely to die for. However, it also has a bit of a problem with crime that stems mostly from the local mafia. That doesn’t mean you should skip this amazing city—but you should be particularly cautious, especially after dark.

Manila, Philippines

Manila is a city of contrasts, with rich cultural heritage side-by-side with modern luxuries. Yet this comes with a price—namely, crime & pollution. Crime rates have steadily increased over the last few years and the city has the highest figures across Southeast Asia. As such, you should keep an eye on your belongings and stick to safer areas if you’re visiting.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

If you’ve ever been to Rio, then you’ll understand why the city’s Carnival & beaches are world-famous—but so is its crime rate. Tourists are particularly at risk in crowded areas and favelas. There’s a lot to love in Rio but staying safe here involves being extra vigilant and only going along the well-trodden paths.

Bali is a victim of its own success. The island paradise has seen so many visitors that it’s struggling with environmental issues & overcrowding. Anyone visiting here should be aware of their environmental footprint and perhaps choose some of the less-visited spots for a better experience.

Paris, France

Paris, oh Paris. The city of love has had its share of darkness, with recent terrorism & civil unrest. Of course, it’s still the romantic and rich cultural place that we all adore but nowadays, you have to keep an eye on current events. Being cautious in crowded places is just another part of the visit. Groups of men have been reported to harass tourists for money at popular spots and pickpocketing is rife.
