13 Things People Pretend to Like But Actually Hate

Let’s be honest—everyone pretends to like things that we secretly can’t stand. Maybe it’s to avoid being the odd one out or just because we don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings. Either way, you know what we’re talking about! Here are thirteen things many of us lie about enjoying.

Going to Work Parties

The idea of hanging out with coworkers outside the office with free food & drinks sounds fun at first. But honestly, it often feels more like a chore than a party. Trying to make small talk with the guy from accounting or laughing at your boss’s not-so-funny jokes? We’d rather be relaxing at home—yet we go and smile.

Watching Sports We Don’t Understand

You probably had those times when you’re in a room full of people screaming at the TV during a game and you’ve screamed along, hoping nobody asks you what’s going on. It doesn’t matter if it’s football or cricket—we all have one we pretend to like. We don’t want to seem uncool so we cheer & groan with the rest of them.

Listening to Trending Music

Staying up-to-date with the latest hits is great but what if you’re not a fan? Pretending to enjoy songs you’d rather mute comes down to fitting in. Nobody wants to be the outcast who doesn’t like that trendy song. We nod our heads while pretending to know the lyrics—yet also hope nobody asks us for our favorite part!

Eating Health Foods

Kale, quinoa and all those other “superfoods” we’re supposed to love. Yes, they’re good for you but you’ll struggle to find someone who actually enjoys their taste. We’ve all praised a green smoothie while dreaming of a cheeseburger before. It’s just a way of keeping up appearances—quite literally.

Reading Classic Literature

Classic literature is sometimes great. But other times? It’s like slogging through mud. However, if you admit you’re not into them then you become the uncultured person in the group. We’ll claim to love them while talking about the themes & characters with as much enthusiasm as we can.

Enjoying Exercise

Of course, exercise is great for your health yet you’re lying if you pretend you’re excited about that 6 AM run. The thing is, admitting you’d rather not exercise can make you seem lazy. We talk about loving the gym & the rush after a good workout—all while secretly dreading every minute of it. At least we’re taking care of ourselves!

Watching Foreign Films

Foreign films are rather difficult to watch for a number of reasons, including the subtitles & different storytelling styles. It’s a lot. Unfortunately, in certain circles, not liking them makes you come across as less sophisticated. We’re forced to nod along instead. We’ll praise the cinematography while praying nobody asks us to name our favorite director.

Attending Baby Showers

Baby showers are important for expectant parents and they can be fun—for some people. Not everyone’s into guessing baby food flavors or oohing and aahing over onesies. Going, though, is a sign of support and so we’ll play along. We’re happy for our loved ones but really, does anyone think that the baby shower activities are the height of fun?

Drinking Craft Beer

The craft beer scene has exploded and with it, the pressure to appreciate all these unique brews. However, what if you just don’t like the taste? Saying so is a definite way to seem unrefined which is why we pretend to savor every bitter note of our IPAs & stouts. In reality, we miss our straightforward lagers.

Following Fashion Trends

Fashion trends come and go at lightning speed and keeping up can feel like a full-time job. Many of us will wear something because it’s “in”—even if it doesn’t suit our style or we simply don’t like it. We’re trying to fit in. We put on the latest styles (uncomfortable or not), all in the name of fashion.

Pretending to Understand Art

Art is supposed to be subjective yet we’ll never admit we don’t get why a canvas painted blue is a masterpiece. Instead, we’ll nod in the galleries and throw around terms like “interesting use of color.” We appreciate art—we just don’t always understand it. Let’s just hope it sounds like we know what we’re talking about.

Camping

Many people romanticize camping as this great escape into nature. However, the reality of bugs, no showers & sleeping on the ground is hardly appealing. Admitting so makes you sound high-maintenance – so we pack our bags & put on a brave face instead. Sleeping under the stars? Of course that’s great!

Watching Award Shows

Award shows are usually long & predictable yet we’ll pretend to care about who wins what. Why? Because we want to join the conversation the next day. Even if we have it on in the background, we’ll wonder the entire time why we’re not doing something more engaging—or useful.
