Tipping used to be something we did to show appreciation for good service, but now it seems to pop up everywhere. The need to tip — from coffee shops to self-checkout counters — has increased, even where it might not necessarily be necessary. As much as we should show appreciation for working people, tipping shouldn’t be mandatory — it should be voluntary. Here are 10 places where you might feel pressured to leave a tip—but you don’t really need to.

Coffee Shops
Tipping at cafes has now become common, especially when you’re asked for it on the payment screen. It’s one thing to reward good service, but many feel obligated to tip for simple orders like a black coffee. Remember that tipping is optional – you shouldn’t feel bad about not tipping if you receive simple service that does not involve table service or extra work.
Fast-Food Restaurants
Fast-food chains are famous for delivering fast, self-serve meals. Some have recently begun offering tipping options on their payment screens. The staff in these jobs deserve decent wages, but tipping isn’t really expected. It’s okay to pass unless you feel the service was exceptional.
Self-Checkout Counters
The rise of the self-checkout counters at grocery stores and department stores has brought tipping prompts, even when you’re already doing all the work. Tipping doesn’t make a whole lot of sense here because there’s no direct service. You don’t have to think twice about skipping this one.
Takeout Counters
When picking up a takeout order, many people now encounter tipping prompts. Takeout, compared to dining in, usually doesn’t have any additional service such as table waiting. You might tip if the serviceperson did something extra (like a big or customized order) but you don’t have to do that every time.
Delivery Apps
Service charges and tipping options are frequently offered in delivery apps. Tipping delivery drivers is expected but you don’t have to tip twice if there is already a delivery fee built into the price. Check the breakdown before you decide whether or not to tip.
Retail Stores
Tipping is now available at the register of some shops such as boutiques or specialty stores. This can be awkward as the workers are often hourly waged and there’s direct service as you might find in a restaurant. You don’t have to tip unless they actually took time out of their day to help you.
Drive-Thru Windows
Tipping jars or payment prompts have been popping up on drive-thru windows of fast-food outlets and coffee houses. We all like to appreciate friendly service but we should not be expected to tip a drive-thru. Don’t feel pressured unless you want to be extra thankful.
Salons with Automated Payment Systems
Tipping your stylist or barber is normal, although some salons now have tipping prompts for a receptionist or employee who wasn’t directly there for you. It’s polite to tip good service, but you don’t have to tip everyone in the shop.
Hotels for Minimal Service
Hotels often include tipping envelopes for housekeepers or add gratuity options during booking. It is courteous to tip for housekeeping or concierge, but you don’t have to tip for picking up your own luggage or having only a few brief interactions at the front desk.
Grocery Delivery Services
When you order groceries on the web, tips often show up alongside delivery charges. Just like in delivery, tipping is not required if the service charge already applies. If you want to tip, make sure it goes directly to the driver instead of the company.
