Everyone has their quirks and unfortunately, many of us hate ours. But it shouldn’t be that way! In fact, our quirks might actually be a secret gift that we don’t realize benefits us. In fact, many incredible people have turned what some might see as “oddities” into their biggest strengths because they see the glass as half full. And they refuse to let anything stop them! Master of Echolocation

After losing his sight as a baby, Daniel Kish didn’t just sit back. He taught himself echolocation by using clicking sounds to “see” his surroundings. He bikes, hikes—he even has quite an independent life, all while teaching others with visual impairments to do the same. Now, that’s one way to turn a challenge into a superpower.
The Chilly Champ

Some like it hot but Wim Hof prefers the cold. Hof’s known as “The Iceman” and is famous for surviving in icy environments without turning into a human popsicle—it’s all thanks to his fancy technique. This involves breathing & cold exposure. Hof has broken records and also teaches people how to improve their immune systems and handle stress better.
The Human Camera

Stephen Wiltshire has an incredible talent—when he sees a picture of a city, he can draw it down to the last detail, all from memory. This is because he is what is known as an autistic savant. Essentially, he is highly skilled in one particular area despite his autism. Wiltshire became a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) because of his contributions to the art world. But that’s not all. He has his own gallery at London’s Royal Opera Arcade in London—if that’s not proof of someone using their quirks to achieve greatness, we don’t know what is.
Animal Whisperer

Temple Grandin sees the world differently because of her autism. However, rather than letting it hold her back, she’s used it to get inside animals’ heads and changed how we handle livestock. For example, she created more humane facilities for them. This has made life better for millions of animals while also improving the agriculture industry. Essentially, she used her quirks to benefit other living things. There’s nothing more selfless than that.
The Footloose Pilot

You don’t need arms to fly a plane and Jessica Cox is proof of that. She was born without them yet she didn’t let that stop her dreams of soaring—she’s the first armless licensed pilot. Cox controls the plane with her feet. She even has a black belt in Taekwondo! Beyond flying, Cox is a motivational speaker who encourages people to push past what they think are their limits.
The Boy Who “Saw” With Sound

Ben Underwood was another echolocation genius. After losing his eyes to cancer at three, he used tongue clicks to understand the world and he managed to skateboard & play basketball. He could do anything else his heart desired! Clearly, vision involves more than what the eyes see and humans have an incredible sense of adaptability.
The One-Armed Drummer

Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen didn’t miss a beat after a car accident took his arm. No, came back with a custom drum kit he could play with one arm & his feet. Why? Because rock ‘n’ roll has no barriers and Rick rocked harder than ever! Better yet, he inspired countless other people who are dealing with their own challenges.
Actor and Advocate

Chris Burke, known for his role in “Life Goes On,” has Down syndrome. However, that hasn’t stopped him from succeeding on screen and advocating for others with disabilities—his work has changed minds about what people with Down syndrome may achieve since they’re no less capable than the rest of us. Everyone deserves a chance to chase their dreams.
Laughing at Adversity

Maysoon Zayid has cerebral palsy yet she’s turned it into something funny. She has made her condition part of her stand-up routine in a way that gets laughs while also spreading awareness. Zayid shows us that it’s okay to joke about our differences because when you have to deal with a challenge, you should face it with a smile to change your own outlook—and the world’s. In fact, you never know what could happen and it might end up as something quite beneficial. Give it a try!
The Limbless Motivator

While Nick Vujicic was born without arms or legs, that hasn’t slowed him down. These days, he’s a motivational speaker who travels the world to teach people to overcome obstacles & live life to the fullest. Essentially, Nick’s message is no limbs, no limits! We should all look beyond our limitations and focus on our potential instead of worrying about the things we can’t do. That’s the best way to be!
The Voice of Kindness

After being bullied online for her appearance due to a rare congenital disease, Lizzie Velasquez decided to focus on positivity. She’s a motivational speaker & author. Velasquez fights bullying and calls for people to celebrate beauty in all forms, showing us why we should always choose kindness. She’s made a difference in countless lives.
The Guitarist Who Plays With His Feet

Tony Melendez was born without arms—but that didn’t stop him from picking up a guitar. He plays it with his feet. In fact, his incredible talent helped him get a performance for Pope John Paul II! His music is a beautiful example of how to strum your own tune (no matter what) and that creativity knows no bounds.
The 3-Foot Giant

Sean Stephenson was only three feet tall and fragile as glass due to a disease called osteogenesis imperfecta. However, his spirit was unbreakable. As a therapist and motivational speaker, he inspired millions to look beyond their physical conditions to believe in their worth. Our value doesn’t come from our appearance but rather, it’s measured by the size of our heart & the strength of our character.
