The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS) split from the main Mormon church because they wanted to keep practicing polygamy. Warren Jeffs was their leader for a long time and he was later jailed for some serious crimes – including child abuse. The FLDS live in groups far away from everyone else — which has made a lot of people rather worried about what’s going on there.

The Ant Hill Kids were a Canadian religious group led by Roch Thériault and it was all kinds of bad news. Thériault had total control over his followers and he abused them sexually & physically – claiming it was a kind of healing. It all came crashing down when the police got involved and saved the people who were left – putting Thériault behind bars.

Daniel Perez, the leader of Angel’s Landing, told his followers he could live forever and predict the future. He also claimed he could perform miracles. With this power, he committed murder & other serious crimes for over 20 years. Perez was finally caught in 2010 and sentenced to life in prison.

Talk about weird. The Church of Euthanasia told people we need fewer humans on the planet & they suggested some rather extreme ways to make that happen. Chris Korda – the founder – definitely got people’s attention. The religion centers around four pillars — suicide, abortion, cannibalism & sodomy.

Love Has Won

Amy Carlson went by the name “Mother God” and she led the group Love Has Won with the promise that her followers would get to a higher spiritual level. She claimed to be Jesus reincarnated and that she could use “love” to heal people. In 2021, Carlson’s body was found mummified, raising a whole lot of questions about what was really going on with her group.

Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati started Kashi Ashram with promises of love & spiritual growth. But soon enough, stories started coming out about the leader working followers to the bone and accusations that she forced them to give her custody of their kids. Behind all the claims of love, they’re apparently taking advantage of people.

Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army is mostly known for being quite violent but it has a religious side to it, too. Kony told his followers he was getting messages from spirits & mixed all sorts of beliefs to justify doing horrible things, including kidnapping kids. As you might imagine, this group has caused a lot of suffering.

In 2007 some people from the True Russian Orthodox Church holed up in a cave in Russia. Why? Because they thought the world was ending. Their leader, Pyotr Kuznetsov, convinced them that leaving the cave meant doom and even after he was arrested, they stayed put. Some of them later died.
