So many people believe different myths & tall tales about atheism. As such, it’s time we take a moment to sort out the facts from the fiction. Instead of debating beliefs, we’re just trying to clear up what atheism is—and what it’s definitely not. Here are 12 misconceptions about atheism and the truth behind them.

Atheists Hate Religion
While it’s quite common to see angry atheists in movies who despise anything religious, it’s not true. Atheism just means someone doesn’t believe in gods. Yes, some of them might criticize religion but many atheists are cool with others practicing their faiths. They might even take part in holiday celebrations—they just don’t subscribe to the beliefs.
Atheists Lack Morals or Values
Whoever said atheists can’t tell right from wrong was completely misguided. Atheists have morals too but simply don’t rely on a holy book to figure them out. Instead, they might think about what’s fair or what makes sense based on kindness & common sense. They’re like anyone else—making moral decisions based on their values.
Atheists Assert There Is No God
Not all atheists believe that there is no God and many are what you might call “agnostic atheists.” They don’t necessarily believe in God—but they’re also not saying they can prove there’s nothing out there. Instead, they just haven’t been convinced by the idea of a higher being. They’re open to evidence if it ever comes along.
Atheism Is a Belief System
Atheism also isn’t a belief system or a religion. You should think of it more as a single answer to the question, “Do you believe in gods?” For atheists, that answer is “no” and that’s where it ends. There are no rituals or sacred texts that all atheists follow—it’s a personal stance about one aspect of the world.
Atheists Worship Satan
Let’s get this straight—atheists don’t believe in any supernatural beings and that includes Satan! The whole idea of worshiping Satan is completely wrong because if atheists don’t believe in God, then they don’t believe in demonic figures. So don’t assume that the atheist “agenda” focuses on dark rituals or satanic holidays!
Atheism Is Based on Science
Even though many atheists respect science and support evidence-based understanding of the world, atheism itself isn’t built on science. It’s entirely possible to be an atheist & not agree with science at all. Atheism simply means you don’t believe in gods—how you come to that conclusion is up to you.
Atheists Are Always Rational
Likewise, it’s easy to picture atheists as being rather rational, logic-driven people. But just like any group, atheists come in all types. Some might love a good debate, while others might believe in ghosts or get superstitious about lucky numbers. As such, you may not believe in God but you could also be quite illogical, too.
Atheists Don’t Experience Awe or Wonder
Yes, atheists don’t believe that a deity is responsible for the mysteries of the universe—yet they can still feel a sense of awe. Many atheists are still amazed by Mother Nature & the vastness of space. For atheists, the beauty of the world is enough to feel amazed but with no divine explanation required.
Atheists Are Sure About the Universe’s Origins
Some people think atheists have all the answers about how the universe began. But really, atheism has nothing to do with cosmic origins. Most atheists do believe in the Big Bang theory—although it’s not true for all of them. They can have all kinds of beliefs about the universe’s start just as long as it doesn’t involve a creator.
Atheists Want to Ban Religion
Yes, some atheists strongly support keeping government & religion separate, which is known as secularism. Yet that doesn’t mean they want to shut down all churches or ban religion. Instead, many atheists want to allow people to believe as they wish—they just don’t want these beliefs running the government or writing the laws.
Atheists Are Angry or Unhappy People
Another harmful stereotype is of the grumpy atheist with a chip on their shoulder. It’s not true! In reality, atheists can be just as happy & kind as anyone else because not believing in God doesn’t mean you’re mad at the world. Your sense of happiness comes from a whole mix of life stuff instead of only your belief system.
All Atheists Support Euthanasia and Abortion
With controversial issues like euthanasia or abortion, many people think every atheist is on the same page. However, that’s not how it works. Atheists have a range of views that come from their personal & ethical ideas and not their atheism. Like everyone else, they think through these issues to make up their own minds.
