Untreated trauma often manifests in small daily behaviors that eventually tear relationships apart without people even realizing they are suffocating others.

Hypervigilance

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-13835" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Shutterstock_172133654.jpg" alt="Closeup portrait of a young man with shirt, very timid, shy and anxious, playing with hands nervously looking to side, isolated on a white background.
They live on high alert, waiting for “the other shoe to drop.” Innocent comments can be perceived as attacking or a partner being in a quiet mood can be interpreted as wanting to leave, causing chaos in relationships.

Isolation

<img decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-21826" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Shutterstock_2492025589.jpg" alt="Loneliness concept.
They’d rather be alone than risk rejection, disappointment or being hurt. They isolate themselves from friend groups by not returning texts, canceling at the last minute, or refusing to allow people into their lives.

Testing

<img decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-22396" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Shutterstock_2767582951.jpg" alt="Argument, tension and couple in living room with fight, conflict or frustration in toxic relationship.
They often unconsciously set up tests to see if the people who love them will stick around. Playing dumb, picking fights, or pushing your buttons are all ways of testing to see if others will leave them, which often wears people around them down and makes them leave.

Perfectionism

Many strive to be perfect and do everything themselves so that no one will ever be able to reject or condemn them. But when people are that hard on themselves (and others), they often come across as cold, closed-off, or judgmental. Few people want to befriend someone whom they can never relate to on a human level.

Volatility

When trauma goes untreated, people are walking around with an invisible bucket of stress that is always full. They are emotionally holding as much as they can handle, so when someone pushes their button (even if it’s just a little bit), they spill over with extreme anger or sudden crying jags. This makes friends and family feel like they constantly have to walk on eggshells.

Numbing

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-13829" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Shutterstock_2614619575.jpg" alt="Woman, phone and bored on sofa in home, texting and check notification on web in living room.
When feeling too much pain, they check out emotionally, through distance, drugs, work, or social media. They become emotionally unavailable and their partner, child or friend feels totally ignored, unappreciated or alone with them.

People-pleasing

Sometimes traumatized people go to extreme lengths to try to please everyone else, even if it means neglecting their own needs. Because they never learn to say “no,” they can develop huge reservoirs of secret resentment that can erupt and harm the relationship.

Defensiveness

Past trauma can warp their perception of the world to the point that feedback from others feels like an assault on their safety. Helpful feedback from a partner, even when presented kindly and constructively, can be unfairly perceived as criticism. They may become overwhelmed with denial, counterattack, or turn it around to avoid honest conversation.

Chaos-seeking

Growing up in an unpredictable environment can make peace feel foreign and deeply uncomfortable to the brain. They might find themselves diving back into chaos or unnecessarily creating problems. This is because they subconsciously feel more comfortable in their constantly heightened state of stress.

Over-sharing

Desperate for quick intimate connections, they may open up about their deepest wounds and trauma history to people they’ve only recently met. Bombing people with trauma dumps can leave acquaintances feeling smothered, confused about boundaries, and repelled.

Co-dependency

They may cling to a romantic partner or friend too tightly. Instead of drawing strength from multiple outlets, they depend on that one person to provide all of their feelings of safety, value, and stability. That is a lot of pressure for one person to shoulder, and it can quickly drain them.

Rejection-first

Having an abandonment fear running deep in their core, they often rather break up or part ways at the slightest inconvenience. Cutting ties before someone else has the chance makes them less vulnerable to being hurt by that person leaving them.

Did you know Canada has a country syrup reserve? Based in Quebec, the Global Strategic Maple Syrup Reserve actually regulates how much syrup is on the market at any given time. Think of it as an international bank vault for maple syrup.

It helps regulate the syrup price, so the supply doesn’t drop dangerously low. In short, it’s important enough that it’s been robbed in a multi-million-dollar heist.

Canada has the longest coastline of any country in the world. The coast stretches for over 202,000 kilometres, and meets three oceans: the Pacific, Atlantic, and Arctic.

If you wanted to walk the Canadian coastline from end to end, without stopping for a single day of rest, it would take you just over 30 years.

Canada’s town Churchill, Manitoba, is known as the “Polar Bear Capital of the World.” With that nickname comes one particularly unofficial town rule: leave your car doors unlocked.

So if you’re out walking and suddenly spot a polar bear coming towards you, you’ll always have somewhere safe to go and pop inside.

If you have Celiac disease in Canada, you are allowed to claim the incremental cost of gluten-free foods as a medical expense on your taxes.

Simply put, gluten-free food is way more expensive than its wheat-based substitutes, so diagnosed Canadians can write off the extra cost at tax time as long as they have a prescription.

Canada is not all ice and snow. Parts of Canada actually function like deserts. The Okanagan Valley region of British Columbia is a semi-arid region, and farmers grow vineyards and fruit orchards in the warm, dry climate.

Canada also has the Carcross Desert; most people agree it’s the smallest desert in the world, although it’s technically made up of sand dunes in the North.

Alberta is officially one of the only rat-free zones on Earth. After a severe rat problem in the 1940s, Alberta began an aggressive extermination campaign that continues to this day.

In Alberta, it is even illegal to own a rat as a pet. The province even employs its own team of rat patrollers that are dispatched on an emergency basis if someone spots one.

Canada is home to the largest freshwater lake island on the planet: Manitoulin Island. But it doesn’t stop there. Lake Huron, which Manitoulin is inside of, is itself considered a lake island because it’s inside of Hudson Bay. And guess what? Those little lakes on Manitoulin have islands inside of them too.

Scientists believe that gravity is lower in regions across Hudson Bay because the Earth is still rebounding from the previous Ice Age.

Experts think this has something to do with glacial rebound; the gravitational pull is less because the Earth’s crust is still bouncing back after being weighed down by thick ice sheets thousands of years ago.

Drive around Nunavut and you’ll notice rectangular license plates are uncommon. Nunavut vehicle owners instead receive die-cut plates molded into the precise shape of a white bear.

These have become Nunavut’s official trademark and a source of major pride amongst its inhabitants. They are essentially built-in advertisements reminding everyone that Nunavut is in the Arctic.

Some everyday habits fade so gradually that you don’t realize how much life has changed until you look back at how things used to be done.

1. Using Paper Maps in the Car

Before GPS became standard, trips often meant unfolding maps and planning routes manually.
Getting lost wasn’t rare—it was just part of the experience.

2. Calling Businesses Instead of Googling Them

Finding hours, menus, or services used to mean picking up the phone.
Now, most people automatically search online instead of making a call.

3. Waiting for Store Flyers to Plan Shopping

Weekly paper flyers were once the main way people decided what to buy.
Now, prices and deals are checked instantly on apps or websites.

4. Writing Down Every Appointment

Before digital calendars, schedules were tracked in notebooks, planners, or fridge calendars.
Missing or forgetting something was much easier without alerts and reminders.

5. Visiting Banks for Simple Transactions

Deposits, transfers, and bill payments often required in-person visits.
Now, most banking is done in seconds through mobile apps.

6. Printing Directions Before Leaving the House

People used to print MapQuest-style directions or write them down by hand.
Today, navigation apps adjust routes in real time without any prep.

7. Paying With Cash for Almost Everything

Cash used to be the default for daily purchases.
Now, tap payments and cards have replaced it in most situations.

8. Waiting for TV Shows to Air Weekly

Missing an episode meant waiting for reruns or updates from friends.
Streaming has completely changed how and when content is watched.

Most people don’t notice it happening, but over time, everyday life slowly shifts from physical habits to digital ones.

1. Your First Step in the Morning Is Checking Your Phone

Before getting out of bed, many people immediately check messages, notifications, or news.
It has replaced things like stretching, reading, or planning the day on paper.

2. You Rely on Apps for Almost Every Decision

From where to eat to what to buy, apps now guide most choices.
What used to involve asking people or exploring in person now starts with a quick search.

3. You Take Screenshots Instead of Writing Things Down

Instead of notebooks or memory, information is often saved as screenshots.
It’s become the fastest way to “store” something for later.

4. You Use Voice or Text Instead of Face-to-Face Conversations

Even when people are nearby, communication often still happens through messaging.
Digital interaction has gradually replaced more in-person exchanges.

5. You Shop Without Physically Seeing Products First

Clothes, electronics, and groceries are often bought online without seeing them in person.
Reviews, images, and descriptions now replace physical inspection.

6. You Use Navigation Even for Familiar Places

Even short or familiar trips often involve GPS.
It has become a habit rather than something only used when lost.

7. You Track Time Through Notifications, Not Clocks

Alarms, reminders, and alerts now structure the day more than traditional clocks.
Time awareness is increasingly managed by devices rather than observation.

8. You Spend “Downtime” Scrolling Instead of Doing Nothing

Moments of waiting—like commuting or lines—are almost always filled with screens.
Empty time has quietly turned into digital time.

Politeness isn’t always about big gestures—often it’s the small, almost invisible habits that shape how people are perceived.

1. Saying People’s Names in Conversation

Using someone’s name naturally during a chat creates a sense of attention and respect.
It makes interactions feel more personal without being obvious or forced.

2. Holding Doors Without Making It a “Moment”

Some people hold doors open casually without turning it into a big gesture.
It feels natural and effortless, which often comes across as more genuine.

3. Responding Even With a Simple “Got it”

Acknowledging messages—even briefly—shows awareness and consideration.
It prevents uncertainty and keeps communication smooth.

4. Not Interrupting, Even in Fast Conversations

Waiting for someone to finish speaking, even during quick exchanges, signals respect.
It’s a small habit that changes how people experience a conversation.

5. Cleaning Up After Themselves in Shared Spaces

Whether at work, home, or public areas, leaving things tidy shows quiet responsibility.
It’s often noticed more than people realize.

6. Giving People Time to Finish Their Thought

Some people pause instead of jumping in immediately.
That small delay often makes others feel heard and valued.

7. Matching the Tone of the Situation

Adjusting how you speak depending on context—formal, casual, serious—shows awareness.
It helps conversations feel appropriate and comfortable.

8. Saying “Thanks” for Small Things

Acknowledging minor actions, like passing something or waiting, builds a habit of appreciation.
Over time, it shapes how considerate someone appears overall.

Confidence isn’t always about bold personality; it often shows up in small, subtle behaviors people pick up on without realizing.

1. Speaking Slightly Slower Than the Moment Feels

Rushing through words can signal nervousness.
People who slow their speech just a bit often come across as more composed and in control.

2. Making Brief Eye Contact in Conversations

It doesn’t have to be intense or constant.
Short, steady eye contact during key moments of a conversation often reads as confidence and presence.

3. Not Over-Explaining Simple Things

Confident communication is usually clear and direct.
People who avoid unnecessary justification tend to sound more certain in what they’re saying.

4. Keeping Movements Calm and Deliberate

Small actions—like sitting down, gesturing, or walking—can signal confidence when they’re not rushed or fidgety.
Controlled movement often creates a stronger presence.

5. Pausing Before Answering Questions

A short pause before responding can make someone seem thoughtful rather than reactive.
It gives the impression that they’re considering their answer carefully.

6. Using Fewer Filler Words

Reducing “um,” “like,” and “you know” helps speech feel more intentional.
Even small changes in language can shift how confident someone sounds.

7. Standing or Sitting with Open Posture

Not crossing arms tightly or shrinking into space can subtly change how someone is perceived.
Open posture often signals comfort and self-assurance.

8. Ending Statements Without Softening Them Too Much

Confident communication often avoids over-apologizing or weakening phrases.
Simple, clear statements tend to land with more impact.

Sometimes it’s not what people are actually doing, it’s the small habits they show in public that create the impression of a packed, fast-moving life.

1. Always Holding the Phone, Even When Not Using It

Just having a phone in hand signals activity and availability.
It creates the look of someone constantly managing messages, work, or plans—even during downtime.

2. Walking Fast in Public Spaces

A slightly faster walking pace often makes someone appear like they’re on a schedule.
Even if there’s no real urgency, it gives off a “heading somewhere important” impression.

3. Wearing Headphones Without Playing Anything Loud

Headphones can signal focus or unavailability.
Even without loud audio, they subtly communicate that someone is occupied or “in their own world.”

4. Checking the Calendar Mid-Conversation

Pulling up a calendar during a chat creates the sense of a tightly scheduled day.
It reinforces the idea that time is carefully managed.

5. Rapid, Short Replies to Messages

Quick responses—even brief ones—can make someone seem constantly in motion.
It gives the impression they’re juggling multiple things at once.

6. Multitasking in Public

Scrolling while waiting, replying while walking, or ordering while doing something else signals constant engagement.
It builds a picture of someone who is always doing more than one thing.

7. Talking in “Time Blocks”

Phrases like “I’ve got 10 minutes” or “I’m between things” suggest a packed schedule.
Even if the day isn’t actually busy, the language itself creates that perception.

Even though it processes pain signals, the brain itself has no pain receptors, which is why some brain surgeries are performed while patients are awake.

2. Your Brain Shrinks While You Sleep

During deep sleep, brain cells shrink by up to 60%, allowing cerebrospinal fluid to flush out metabolic waste more efficiently.

3. You See the World Slightly in the Past

Because sensory processing takes time, everything you see is actually milliseconds behind real time—your brain is constantly catching up.

4. Memories Change Every Time You Recall Them

Each time you remember something, your brain reconstructs the memory, subtly altering it instead of replaying a perfect recording.

5. Your Brain Decides Before “You” Do

Neuroscientists can detect decision-related brain activity seconds before a person becomes consciously aware of making a choice.

6. Your Brain Filters Out Most of Reality

At any moment, your brain ignores millions of sensory inputs, allowing you to experience only what it believes is most important.

7. Multitasking Is Mostly a Myth

The brain doesn’t truly multitask—it rapidly switches attention, which reduces accuracy and increases mental fatigue.

8. The Brain Can Create Convincing False Memories

People can form vivid, emotionally rich memories of events that never actually happened, without realizing they’re false.

9. Your Brain Uses More Energy Than Any Other Organ

Despite weighing only about 3 pounds, the brain consumes around 20% of your body’s energy at rest.

10. Stress Temporarily Rewires the Brain

Chronic stress can weaken memory and decision-making circuits while strengthening fear and habit pathways.

11. Your Brain Is Constantly Predicting the Future

Rather than reacting to the world, the brain is continuously predicting what will happen next and adjusting when it’s wrong.

Major discoveries over the past decade reshaped understanding of our solar system.

Our little corner of the cosmos is always full of surprises, each illuminating a new aspect of how wrong we have been about its peculiarities. Even just in our own cosmic backyard, from the mysterious lurking of icy moons around distant planets to fresh data on what’s happening with a few closer neighbors, scientists are tumbling down a rabbit hole into new levels of understanding.

Here, we share with you 12 unbelievable things we learned about the solar system in just the last decade.

Water on the Moon

In 2020, NASA confirmed finding water molecules on the sunlit surface of the Moon for the first time. And this is huge, because it shows just how much more water could be on the Moon than we previously knew.

Water is crucial for long-term lunar missions, including offering a way to keep astronauts alive so that they can live and work on the Moon.

Planet Nine Hypothesis

Over the last few years, more and more clues have emerged that there could be a ninth planet located way out past Neptune, often referred to as “Planet Nine.”

The suspected planet is believed to be huge, which could explain why it seems capable of influencing the orbits of smaller objects on its side of the Kuiper Belt.

Mercury’s Magnetic Field

In 2020, research found the magnetic field of Mercury is far more complex than currently accepted. Those fluctuations, discovered on some boulders they studied with their magnetometer, in turn, could shed light on the planet’s core and its geologic past.

Insight into this could provide clues on how Mercury originated and evolved.

Mars’ Ancient River Systems

NASA’s MRO Orbiters have taken some amazing photos of the planet, Mars, which show giant rivers.

The only conclusion is that the planet was previously much wetter and had a climate similar to our own, where liquid water could exist on its surface.

Asteroid Bennu’s Surface

The OSIRIS-REx mission arrived at the near-Earth asteroid in 2018, surveying a rocky surface speckled with boulders and particles smaller than an inch.

The study of Bennu is important because it will help scientists learn about the early solar system and possibly more information on the origins of water on Earth. Scientists are also collecting samples to take back for more research.

Pluto’s Atmosphere

In 2015, scientists discovered that Pluto has a complex atmosphere which varies with altitude and changes over time.

This indicates that the surface conditions on Pluto, including temperature and pressure, can fluctuate dramatically, a bit of a surprise for such a far far away object in our solar system.

Rings of Neptune

In 2020, scientists observed that the rings of Neptune are less old than we believed.

They think the rings may be composed of dust and other debris from nearby moons, evidence that there are ongoing processes in the outer solar system. This finding provides better insight into how ring systems work.

Triton’s Geysers

The images from Voyager 2 show nitrogen geysers erupting on Neptune’s large Moon, Triton. This important finding implies that Neptune’s largest Moon must be one of very few moons in the outer Solar System to have large quantities of volatile materials flowing on its frigid surface.

That begs some intriguing questions about what is going on below that icy surface.

Planetary Formation

New observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) provide an unprecedented major step in the right direction, showing a young protostar surrounded by two thin rings, where planets are obviously forming.

Astronomers have also been studying dust and gas disks around young stars to help learn more about the processes that yield planets. It helps us understand better how our solar system could have been born.

Diamond Rain on Jupiter and Saturn

We know from recent studies that it may be raining diamonds on Jupiter and Saturn, an occurrence caused by the extreme pressure in their atmospheres.

Carbon is squeezed so hard that it turns into diamonds. This quirky tidbit just makes these huge planets even more fascinating and helps us learn all about their atmosphere.

Discovery of Saturn’s New Moons

In 2021, astronomers found Saturn has a whopping 82 moons (20 new ones discovered).

The find suggests that we still have so much to learn about Saturn and its forking system of moons, with the planet now leading our solar system in terms of designated moon count.

The Parker Solar Probe

Launched in 2018, the Parker Solar Probe is the only spacecraft to fly into the Sun’s outer atmosphere, its corona. It’s built to withstand blazing temperatures reaching 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit while hurtling through space at 430,000 miles per hour.

The hope is the solar probe will provide more information on how and why space weather occurs, which could potentially improve predictions of such phenomena here on Earth.

A lot of Americans think they already understand Canadian cities. But the real numbers tell a different story.

Lots of Americans are guilty of downsizing Canadian cities during conversations. They figure that, since it’s a smaller economy, the cities must somehow feel less intense or cheaper than their American counterparts. They’re not always right.

In reality, many Canadian cities function in a way that surprises many Americans once they look past the stereotypes.

Here are ten things that Americans generally underestimate about Canadian cities. A few of these differences may only be obvious from living there for a while. Which of these false ideas annoys you the most?

Toronto’s tech skills

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-16738" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Shutterstock_2261947543.jpg" alt="Laptop, network and data center with a black woman it support engineer working in a dark server room.
Many Americans see Toronto as a banking city, and that means they underestimate how powerful the tech workforce is there. But the tech industry ranks a lot higher than many Americans expect.

Data from CBRE’s 2025 Tech Talent report ranks Toronto third in the entirety of North America for its tech talent.

In fact, the nation added 66,600 tech jobs in 2024 alone, and that kind of growth rate was much greater than America’s in the same report.

Vancouver’s role as a trade gateway

Another city that gets underestimated is Vancouver, and this time, it’s in terms of its appearance.

Sure, it does look scenic. But many Americans overlook the city’s industrial importance because of that, even though data shows it’s the largest port by volume in Canada.

The city moved 158 million metric tonnes of cargo in 2024. It’s a rather important city for global trade, not simply regional shipping traffic, making it a lot more than a city that’s nice to look at.

Montréal’s snow removal

Americans sometimes see snow removal as a mere seasonal nuisance in Canada, rather than the huge logistics operation it actually is. Cities like Montréal have to clear snow from around 10,000 kilometres of streets & sidewalks each winter.

That figure is a network larger than a lot of metro road systems. As such, clearing the snow in Canadian cities is a much greater operation than many Americans realize.

Toronto’s “nature in the city”

It’s normal for Americans to imagine Toronto’s green spaces as being a few parkettes scattered across the city. Yet that’s not true.

The city’s ravine system alone is far larger than that, with research finding that the ravines cover around 17% of the city’s land area.

The ravines travel across 11,000 hectares of land in the city. Toronto is a much greener city than many Americans give it credit for.

Big-event attendance

You won’t find many Canadian city events getting a lot of media coverage in the United States, and that’s what makes them easy to overlook. The truth is, Canadian city events do get a lot of attendees.

The Calgary Stampede had 1,331,280 attendees in 2024, and such a figure is close to the crowd levels of major international festivals. Canadian city events are a lot bigger than some Americans assume.

Toronto’s safety

So many Americans think that cities like Toronto must be high-risk places because of their size, and they underestimate how safe they actually are. The 2023 homicide rate in Toronto was 3.35 per 100,000 residents.

The overall violent crime rate is much lower than in other North American metro areas. The general image of Toronto being a dangerous big city doesn’t really fly in practice, and many Americans underestimate how safe it actually is.

Montréal’s bike-share usage

People living in America may have heard about Montréal’s bike-sharing system, although they often see it as a summer novelty. But it’s not.

BIXI logged around 10 million trips in a single year, with 12,000 bikes & over 1,000 stations across the city.

People use bikes in Canadian cities at a much greater scale than many Americans actually realize.

Toronto’s film & TV production scale

The Canadian Media Producers Association reported that Ontario received $2.88 billion in film & TV production between 2022 and 2023. However, lots of Americans don’t know that. They underestimate how popular Canadian cities are as filming locations for American shows.

These cities support major studio projects throughout the year that include large soundstages & experienced crews. Canadian cities work for many international productions.

Vancouver’s rent levels

It’s a common belief among many Americans that Canadian rents are more affordable across the board. Sadly, that’s not true.

Vancouver routinely has the highest average rent in Canada, and the average one-bedroom apartment in the city costs over $2,600 per month.

In fact, many Canadian cities are in the same bracket for the rent prices as high-priced American urban markets. The rent certainly isn’t cheaper over here.

Montréal’s restaurant density

Sure, Americans know a bit about Montréal’s food industry. But they tend to underestimate how many dining spots are across the city, and they have no idea that there are more than 5,000 restaurants on the island.

It actually has one of the highest restaurant-per-resident ratios in the entire continent.
