Planning for retirement is one of the most critical financial decisions you will ever make and there’s plenty of bad advice you need to steer clear of.

“You’ve Still Got Time to Start Saving”

You may think retirement is long in the future, but that’s not the case. The sooner you start, the more time compound interest has to grow your savings. If you wait too long, you’ll have to invest way more to achieve the same ends.

“Rely on Social Security—It’s Enough”

Social Security is an extra help, but it’s not meant to pay for everything during your retirement.

The benefits can cover only a small portion of your working income & future modifications to the program might cut your benefits back. You will never be able to meet your needs if you depend solely on Social Security.

“Invest Only in Safe Options Like Bonds”

<img decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-15824" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Shutterstock_2581103477.jpg" alt="Excited elder family pensioner couple read and check financial document, calculate profit, saving income from investment.
Bonds are risk-free, but if you’re obsessed with them, it’s counterproductive.

Retiree funds have to keep up with inflation & a well-diversified portfolio comprising stocks can deliver higher long-term returns. Don’t play it too safe or you’ll fall short on your financial expectations.

“Your Current Budget Will Work in Retirement”

Most people think their current spending will remain constant when they retire but this doesn’t always work out that way. Your expenses will change drastically when it comes to medical expenses, travel & lifestyle changes.

If you don’t take these adjustments into account, your retirement plan might be short on cash.

“You Can Always Work Longer If You’re Not Ready”

Image Credit: RDNE Stock project /Pexels.com.

You shouldn’t rely on working longer to save money. Unexpected illness, unemployment or a caregiver need can lead to you retiring before you have any choice.

You can save ahead of time & consider working more as an alternative instead of a main strategy.

“Just Follow What Worked for Your Parents”

What worked for people 20 years ago may not work for us now. You’ll need a different plan as healthcare prices go up, pensions shift & life expectancy increases.

Adjust your retirement account to your budget & future.

“Pay Off Your Mortgage First Before Saving”

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-12451" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Shutterstock_2482719413.jpg" alt="Key with house shaped keychain and contract on the table.
While paying off debt is important, prioritizing it over retirement savings isn’t always wise. By waiting too long, you’ll be missing years of compound interest.

If you pay off debt while saving, you are creating a nest egg while bringing down debt.

“Retirement Will Be Just Like Your Vacation”

“You Don’t Need Professional Help—DIY Is Cheaper”

Though directing your own retirement savings saves fees, it can be a costly error.

Money advisers have their expertise to offer; you might have to make complex decisions on investments, taxes & learn how to get out of debt.

It’s worth paying for good advice because you will end up saving some cash in the long run.

“You’ll Figure It Out When You Get There”

This tip makes you doomed. Planning your retirement is important & this should be planned ahead of time, as last-minute choices are very limited.

You should begin early so that you can grow your funds, take advantage of market swings & retire with no worries when the time comes.

Budgeting and debt management, investing and retirement planning, these lessons have transformed the way I approach and deal with my finances today.

Budgeting Isn’t Just for Emergencies

Budgeting is what you do only when you’re struggling, at least that was my thinking for a long time. What I didn’t realize is budgeting can also help with financial peace.

Contrary to what some people think, budgeting does not mean restricting yourself; it makes sure your money works for you in the best way possible. Now, I realize that even small, intentional budgeting can lead to big wins over time.

Debt Isn’t a Life Sentence

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-19443" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Shutterstock_2731972955.jpg" alt="Worried senior man reading utility bill and using laptop at home.
Debt might be an overwhelming issue, but you don’t have to bear it for life. Once I began to learn how to manage and reduce debt, the situation became a lot easier.

It took a while to pay off but splitting it up into smaller payment amounts and prioritizing highest interest payments first was like a weight slowly lifted off my back.

Emergency Funds Are Essential

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-18721" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Shutterstock_1303879720.jpg" alt="Paper notes from Canada.
Emergency funds were something that I used to believe was nice, but not necessary. Big mistake.

There are always some surprises in life like car repair, or doctor’s bill, or unexpected home repairs. With an emergency fund, those things can be met without panicking or borrowing money. Starting small & saving daily is a game changer for me.

Retirement Planning Isn’t Optional

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-12587" src="https://ashandpri.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Depositphotos_151100610_L.jpg" alt="an old couple looking at a jar of coins.
I wish I had started planning seriously for retirement years earlier in life. You can’t work indefinitely, and having a clear plan at the beginning gives you a guide to a nice comfortable future.

Even if it meant having to sacrifice some fun in the moment, those little things add up over time.

Investing Isn’t as Scary as I Thought

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-15824" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Shutterstock_2581103477.jpg" alt="Excited elder family pensioner couple read and check financial document, calculate profit, saving income from investment.
I did not invest for years because I thought it was too complex or risky. But once I started learning the ropes (diversifying, different investments, being realistic), I realized it’s not scary as it sounds.

As long as you do it the right way, investing is a successful means to build wealth and financial independence.

Financial Independence Should Be a Goal

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-19444" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Shutterstock_2552582223.jpg" alt="Planning family budget.
I relied too much on others (family, work, even the government) before I could learn how critical it is to develop financial independence.

I now have multiple streams of income (rent from a spare room, investments, part time work) and have a life where I’m not always being taken care of by others. It’s liberating to know that I can make it work, no matter what happens.

Savings Goals Should Be Personal

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-18938" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Shutterstock_2214463695.jpg" alt="Young Asian couple plans to save money for a trip around the world.
What works for one person might not work for another and I have come to understand that my savings strategy should be adapted to me.

From travel, hobbies or just having a safety net for a rainy day, aligning my finances with my dreams made saving more meaningful and satisfying.

Understanding Taxes is a Game Changer

I never thought about taxes, until I learned about deductions, retirement accounts, and tax strategies that helped keep more money in my pocket.

Being in charge of my taxes made a world of difference in my financial well-being.

Generational Wealth Isn’t Just About Money

It is one thing to leave behind financial wealth, but it is quite another to leave behind a knowledge of how to manage and expand that security.

Sharing my experiences with my children & grandchildren has taught them how to budget effectively.

Money Can Be More than Just Numbers

Money is not about getting rich, it’s about creating an experience-filled, peaceful life.

It’s not how much money you save but how you put it to use in order to fill your life with the memories that matter. It’s been so worth it to get that balance between being financially secure and living your life.

Buying Cheap Shoes

Shoes of low quality quickly deteriorate while also creating blisters & failing to provide enough support.

I think buying several cheap pairs of shoes that quickly fail is less cost-effective than spending money on high-quality footwear that provides comfort & durability.

Skipping Car Maintenance

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-17182" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Shutterstock_2489567439.jpg" alt="Two auto mechanics inspecting car engine in workshop environment.
Oil changes, brake checks, or tire rotations should not be skipped to save money. I have seen how these small issues turn into big (expensive) repairs fast.

Try to keep up with regular maintenance, as it will keep your car running smoothly while helping you prevent those “Why won’t my car start?” moments.

Going for the Cheapest Mattress

An uncomfortable mattress that either feels rock hard or sags can destroy your sleep & cause persistent pain.

Because you’ll spend roughly thirty-three percent of your life sleeping in bed it makes sense to invest in a quality mattress. Better rest, fewer body pains, & no regrets.

Choosing the Cheapest Health Insurance

Many budget health insurance plans come with high deductibles, limited coverage and unexpected out-of-pocket costs.

A better plan will protect you from financial strain when you need it most.

Using Low-Quality Skincare or Hair Products

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-18428" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Shutterstock_2357114915.jpg" alt="Happy attractive brunette middle eastern woman wearing beige top applying body cream on shoulder and smiling at camera, isolated on color background.
Whenever we are shopping for lotions and shampoos, budget deals sound so good, but beware, the cheap formulas in them can typically cause skin dryness & hair damage after using them for a period of time.

Quality products will nourish and protect your skin or hair a lot better, even if they’re a bit more expensive.

Buying the Cheapest Tech & Appliances

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-19288" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Shutterstock_1582965721.jpg" alt="Handsome tired young curly latin man looks seriously intently at the laptop screen.
Electronics like blenders, phones or laptops need to be reliable and have a good warranty.

They can be more expensive, but budget electronics often have frequent malfunctions combined with poor performance and premature failures.

Hiring the Cheapest Contractors or Repair Services

Believe me, if you hire a plumber, electrician, or home repair service, going with the lowest bid usually means sloppy work & cut corners.

You’ll either deal with faulty electrical work and leaky plumbing that result from rushed construction, or you’ll have to pay for fixes later.

Skipping Travel Insurance

Travel insurance usually needs minimal investment but protects you against substantial financial & logistical difficulties during your trip.

Unexpected issues like cancellations and delays can be very stressful, so it’s not worth saving a few dollars on insurance to take that chance.

Buying Discounted Safety Gear

If you get in an accident, you want to make sure that the safety gear you’re wearing protects you well.

It’s never worth saving a few dollars to compromise on quality safety equipment.

Eating Cheap, Unhealthy Food All the Time

Processed snacks and dollar-menu meals might seem convenient, but they can leave you feeling tired & cause bigger health problems over time. Choosing fresh, whole foods is better for your health & helps you stay healthier.

Cook at Home & Plan Your Meals

Image Credit: RDNE Stock project /Pexels.com.

Cooking for yourself can seem difficult but frequent dining out will drain your finances. Reduce your takeout orders. Save money by purchasing ingredients in bulk and preparing multiple meals at once to store in your freezer. You will both save money and improve your diet by choosing healthier food options.

Get Smart About Groceries

The cost of groceries goes through the roof when you only buy name-brand products. Spend less on food by picking store brands and shopping at discount grocery stores. You can also use cashback apps like Ibotta when shopping.

Prepare a grocery list before shopping and make sure you follow it; impulse buying destroys your budget.

Be Energy Efficient

Your electricity bills may rise quickly but small changes will create noticeable savings. Make sure you turn off lights when they are not needed, unplug any idle electronic devices, and opt for LED bulbs for better energy efficiency.

Reduce high energy bills by using fans instead of air conditioning and wearing layers of clothing instead of increasing indoor temperatures.

Downsize Your Internet & Phone Plan

Do you really need the fastest internet plan available? People frequently pay too much money for internet speeds they do not actually use.

Review how much internet you actually use and switch to a lower plan if needed. You can reduce your phone bill by using a more affordable service provider or by reducing your data consumption.

Find a Cheaper Gym Alternative

Cancel your $50+ monthly gym membership if you rarely use it and start considering alternatives. Explore fitness through self-guided at-home workouts, take advantage of free online exercise programs such as YouTube videos, and outdoor activities like running and hiking.

Explore budget-friendly gym options such as Planet Fitness or your local community centers if you enjoy working out at gyms.

Use Public Transport or Carpool

Image Credit: Life Of Pix /Pexels.com.

When you live in a city with efficient public transportation systems, you should fully use it. The costs of gas, insurance, and parking make car ownership expensive.

Choosing to share rides through carpooling or opting for biking and walking routes can save money and improve your health.

Thrift, Swap, or Buy Secondhand

Need furniture, clothes, or home essentials? Explore thrift stores and Facebook Marketplace or barter with friends instead of purchasing new items. Discover high-quality products at unbeatable prices without emptying your wallet.

Negotiate Your Bills

Many companies offer to reduce your bills when you request a lower rate. Contact your internet, phone, or insurance company to find out about existing promotions, any loyalty discounts, or more affordable plans they might offer. A quick five-minute phone conversation might save you hundreds of dollars per year.

DIY Home Repairs & Maintenance

When you live by yourself you have to handle repairs, but professionals are not always necessary. YouTube is the top resource for simple home repairs such as unclogging drains, repairing leaky faucets and painting walls. Investing a small amount of time into DIY tasks helps you avoid costly service bills.

Be Mindful of Impulse Spending

Living alone makes it simple to rationalize small splurging decisions. But over time, those purchases add up. Before you buy something, ask yourself:

Do I really need this?

Can I get it cheaper somewhere else?

Am I going to still want this purchase next week?

Making deliberate spending choices helps you maintain greater financial savings.

Most people talk about being debt-free as their ultimate money goal, but going completely debt-free isn’t as great as you might think since it may, in fact, hold you back.

Missed Investment Opportunities

Having some extra cash means you could either use it to pay off your mortgage early or invest in the stock market. While paying off the mortgage feels safe, there’s a catch. If the stock market is on an upswing, you’ll miss out on some serious gains. Sometimes, the potential return on investments far outweighs the interest you’re saving by paying off debt early.

Low Credit Score

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-19443" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Shutterstock_2731972955.jpg" alt="Worried senior man reading utility bill and using laptop at home.
Avoiding debt altogether will also affect your credit score. Credit scores show lenders how good you are with your finances so without any history of borrowing & repaying, there’s not much for them to go on.

This will hurt your credit score. You might not care now but it’s a big deal if you ever need a loan down the line.

Higher Interest Rates

And when you do manage to get that loan with a so-so credit score, brace yourself for higher interest rates. Lenders believe you’re a wild card since you don’t have a solid borrowing history.

As such, they’ll hedge their bets by charging you more in interest, even if you think you’re good with your debt. You have to prove this to them.

Missed Rewards

When you use credit cards wisely, you’ll get quite a few benefits; think cashback & travel points. Completely staying away from credit cards because you’re avoiding debt means saying goodbye to these benefits.

Don’t just ignore all that money. As long as you’re sensible & pay off your full balance each month, you can make a credit card work for you.

Limited Leverage in Negotiations

Debt is a powerful tool and especially in business. While it might sound counterintuitive, taking on some debt gives you more leverage in negotiations, like when you’re expanding a business or investing in new projects.

You need to be willing to use debt strategically. If you’re not, then you’ll miss opportunities to grow your financial empire.

Inflation Benefits

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-12943" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Shutterstock_2505324085.jpg" alt="Wooden block and the word inflation on a coin placed.
Despite what you might’ve heard, inflation sometimes makes debt cheaper over time. For example, getting a fixed-rate loan means that the money you pay back later is worth less than when you borrowed it.

Don’t ignore the benefits of this. We’d all like to pay back our loans with less money.

Lack of Emergency Preparedness

Of course having an emergency fund is important but it’s not always enough. Access to credit will help you if you’re ever in trouble.

If you’re solely relying on savings, a big unexpected expense may wipe you out while having the option to lean on a line of credit will keep you safe. You don’t have to use it, of course. But you’ll be grateful if you ever do.

Worse Wealth Building

Debt is also a smart way to build wealth when you have investments like real estate. Using mortgages to purchase properties that generate rental income may help you turn a profit that far exceeds the cost of the loan.

Most of us wouldn’t be able to do so without taking on debt. As such, avoiding this will stop you from experiencing any of these wealth-building opportunities.

Reduced Stress from Over-Saving

The pressure to remain debt-free creates its own kind of stress, especially with over-saving. Yes, it’s great to have savings.

But it’s also okay to take on a manageable amount of debt for important life events or investments, rather than draining your savings. In fact, doing so may help you live a more balanced & less stressful financial life.

Stagnation in Personal Finance Growth

Finally, avoiding debt at all costs will stop you from learning how to manage it wisely. Knowing how to use debt to your advantage is an important financial skill.

As such, saying no to debt altogether takes away the chance to learn how to use it for your benefit. Don’t you want to get smarter with your money?

First and most obvious, if you start your CPP at 60, you actually receive money today. If you’re worried about what-ifs of tomorrow, taking CPP early lets you use that money to pay for your mortgage, travel, or daily living expenses now while you’re young enough to enjoy it.

After all, the utility of a dollar at age 60 is likely much greater than the utility of a slightly larger dollar at age 70.

Health concerns

If you don’t expect to live a long time due to health issues or family history, taking CPP at age 60 is a logical option. The pension amounts are strategically calculated such that if you live to be an average age, you’ll receive roughly the same total payout whether you start early or late.

If you feel that you won’t make it to your mid-80s, start receiving your hard-earned pension benefit at age 60. That way, you know for certain you’ll receive the money you’ve paid into your whole career.

Break-even point

Financial advisors love to speak about the break-even age. When do the total dollars you receive by waiting for that bigger cheque equal the total dollars paid out to someone who started collecting at age 60?

For most people, that break-even age is in their late 70s or even early 80s. If you take CPP starting at age 60, you are essentially playing the “bird in the hand” scenario and will enjoy close to 20 years of CPP payments before the person who waits until 70 even catches up to your total career earnings.

Reinvestment power

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-15824" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Shutterstock_2581103477.jpg" alt="Excited elder family pensioner couple read and check financial document, calculate profit, saving income from investment.
If you don’t need the money from CPP to pay bills, you can take that money and invest it in your TFSA or other investment accounts. The earnings (interest or growth) you would collect on that money over 10 years can easily make up for the reduced government cheque you are receiving.

Instead of leaving that money in someone else’s hands, you’re taking it for yourself and watching it grow.

Debt reduction

Debt in retirement is a horrific feeling. If starting your pension at 60 allows you to completely pay off a credit card with high interest, your car payment, or even your mortgage completely, it may be worth taking the lower payment.

Starting your CPP at 60 allows you to drastically reduce your monthly burn rate. Enjoy spending down savings later in life when it doesn’t feel like your budget is handcuffed by bills.

Work flexibility

Retiring doesn’t mean you still can’t work. But taking your CPP starting at 60 allows you that flexibility. That extra pocket money may be all you need to transition into working part-time.

Maybe you can start your own consulting business on the side or pursue a passion project without the pressure of needing a full-time salary. Taking your CPP at 60 allows you to start designing your ideal semi-retirement.

RRSP erosion

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-19443" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Shutterstock_2731972955.jpg" alt="Worried senior man reading utility bill and using laptop at home.
Oftentimes, Canadians who wait to start their CPP find that they need to take out more of their RRSP or other personal savings to make up the difference. By starting your CPP at 60, you allow your private investments to sit for another few years.

Inflation protection

CPP payments will rise with inflation each year, but taking your CPP at 60 allows you to buy goods and services at today’s prices. We all know how expensive everything seems to get as the years go on.

For most people, their dollar is much stronger when they are younger. Spending that money now on a new roof for your house or a new car may be more efficient than waiting for a larger payment to try to catch up to the rising costs of living.

Stress reduction

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-19239" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Shutterstock_2265983449.jpg" alt="Please, Lord.
Last but not least, you know you’ll have that CPP cheque coming in every month. For many people, taking CPP at 60 simply gives them peace of mind that they have a guaranteed amount of money hitting their bank account every month. It takes the stress out of market fluctuations and your personal savings.

Many retirees make 10 costly, but totally avoidable, mistakes in their first year of retirement and experience financial setbacks.

Overspending in the First Year

After working hard for so long, retirees often want to show off their new freedom through big vacations, home renovations, expensive hobbies or by spoiling their grandchildren.

But spending too much money right away may cause your finances to deplete much sooner than you planned.

The Fix: Set a budget that lets you enjoy your retirement without blowing through your savings too quickly during the first year

Underestimating Healthcare Costs

Retirees often mistakenly think Medicare provides full coverage, yet it actually leaves many expenses uncovered. The costs of dental procedures, vision care, hearing aids, and long-term care frequently require large out-of-pocket expenses, which deplete your savings.

The Fix: Find out what services Medicare covers and explore supplemental insurance options to protect yourself from large medical expenses.

Taking Social Security Too Early

You can start collecting Social Security at 62, but here’s the catch: starting your Social Security benefits early reduces your lifetime monthly payments.

Many retirees wish they had delayed their benefits until reaching full retirement age or beyond to maximize their Social Security payments.

The Fix: Postpone your Social Security benefits to receive larger monthly payments, which will strengthen your long-term financial protection.

Not Having a Tax Strategy

Retirement doesn’t mean you stop paying taxes. Taking money from retirement funds without careful planning can lead to larger tax liabilities and possibly increase your tax bracket.

The Fix: Collaborate with a financial planner to develop a withdrawal strategy that minimizes tax losses to Uncle Sam.

Keeping Too Much in Cash

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-18387" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Shutterstock_2649520709.jpg" alt="Happy Caucasian mature woman counts money euro cash in hands after winning lottery bonus or receiving a gift.
An emergency fund is useful yet storing excessive funds in a low-interest savings account leads to financial loss through inflation. As time passes, you’ll notice your money won’t go as far since prices will keep rising.

The Fix: Safely store emergency cash while putting your other funds into low-risk assets that produce income to increase your overall wealth.

Ignoring Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs)

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-17495" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Shutterstock_2631571507.jpg" alt="Mature man sitting on home sofa, using smartphone with calculator app to count money dollars cash.
At age 73 the IRS requires you to begin mandatory withdrawals from your 401(k) or traditional IRA. You may face a 50% penalty charge on the required amount if you forget to withdraw or withdraw an insufficient sum.

The Fix: Use your calendar to track your withdrawal amounts so you can prevent expensive penalties.

Helping Family Too Much

Parents and grandparents naturally feel the desire to provide financial support to their children and grandchildren for major life events such as weddings or educational expenses and home buying.

Gifting excessive amounts to others during early retirement can lead to financial challenges when you need resources later.

The Fix: You should be generous but set strict financial boundaries to make sure your retirement savings remain safe.

Not Having a Budget

When you lose regular income payments, you need to adjust how you spend money. But too many retirees fail to monitor their expenses and experience unexpected financial challenges and unnecessary anxiety.

The Fix: Develop a basic retirement budget that controls your expenses and gives you space to enjoy life.

Forgetting to Update Estate Plans & Beneficiaries

Retirees often forget to update their wills and assign power of attorney and their beneficiary designations after experiencing major life events such as marriage or divorce and the arrival of grandchildren. This will create legal problems later on and assets could end up with the wrong recipients.

The Fix: Keep your estate plans up to date by reviewing them consistently.

Not Staying Active & Social

Retirement needs financial planning as well as maintaining personal well-being and happiness. Retirees who slow down excessively will experience boredom and loneliness, which can lead to health problems.

The Fix: Stay active! Participate in social groups or volunteer work, explore new places, and learn new hobbies.

Targeted Advertising

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-18956" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Shutterstock_1675180834.jpg" alt="Programmatic Advertising concept.
You might’ve noticed how after you’ve been browsing online for something, like a new pair of shoes, you suddenly see ads for those exact shoes popping up on your social media feed.

It’s no coincidence. Social media sites use your browsing history to show you ads they think you’ll click on. And more often than not, we do just that.

Influencer Endorsements

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-18667" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Shutterstock_2488358005.jpg" alt="Indian woman, influencer and home on smartphone with box as gift for social media and live streaming.
When an influencer you follow says they love a certain product, it’s hard not to take notice. It feels more like a recommendation from a friend, making us more likely to consider buying it.

Suddenly, you’ll want things you didn’t even know existed.

The Fear of Missing Out (FOMO)

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-13829" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Shutterstock_2614619575.jpg" alt="Woman, phone and bored on sofa in home, texting and check notification on web in living room.
Similarly, seeing everyone else having fun makes us feel like we’re missing out; social media makes this feeling worse.

We’re constantly bombarded with images of people living their best lives, complete with all the newest & shiniest things. It’s natural to want to keep up so we buy things to be part of the in-crowd.

Flash Sales and Limited-time Offers

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-14986" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Shutterstock_1908314152.jpg" alt="Red bright sale banner on anti-thieft gate sensor at retail shopping mall entrance.
Nothing gets our hearts racing like a good deal that’s about to expire! Businesses know this and they’ll use social media to announce their flash sales & limited-time offers.

When you see that countdown timer, you think you have to act fast; sometimes too fast. We then make purchases we wouldn’t have made under less pressure.

Easy Accessibility to Shopping

Nowadays, you don’t even have to leave your social media app to make a purchase. You can shop right within the app experience and go back to scrolling within a few minutes.

Yes, such convenience is great but it also means we spend money without giving it as much thought as we should.

Subscriptions

Many social media personalities have created subscription based memberships that people pay a monthly cost for. This allows the paying members access to exclusive content, products, advice and personal time with their favourite influencers.

Unfortunately, it’s not hard to go overboard with several different memberships. Pretty soon, you could be paying more than all your monthly streaming services combined.

Exclusive Groups and Communities

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-15123" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Shutterstock_2674610257.jpg" alt="Mobile, relax and happy man in home for internet, social media post and reading news.
Being part of special groups or communities on social media can expose you to even more products that are tailored to your specific interests.

For example, if you’re part of a gardening club on Facebook, you might see a set of tools that you just can’t resist. They seem like they’d make everything so much easier.

Most Canadians assume their online income flies under the radar, but the CRA sees far more than you think.

Bank transfers

The CRA can review your bank statements, including all incoming e-Transfers and wire transfers. When you claim low income on your taxes but live like you make double or triple that shown on your return, but have no other assets or source of income besides thousands in your bank account from online transfers, that’s a red flag right there.

Platform reports

Canadian tax authorities now have agreements with big online platforms like Airbnb, Uber, and Etsy to collect information about their users. If you drive for Uber or sell products online, chances are the CRA already has a virtual slip with your name on it listing how much money you made this year.

PayPal records

A lot of people think that if the money stays in PayPal or another digital wallet, it’s invisible to tax collectors. In fact, CRA won a court case a while back that forced PayPal to disclose information about Canadian business account holders who regularly move money.

Crypto exchanges

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-18661" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Shutterstock_2364212385.jpg" alt="Cryptocurrency ETHEREUM (ETH); gold ethereum coin on trading business charts background.
If you buy Bitcoin from a Canadian cryptocurrency exchange, that exchange is obligated to report any sizable transactions to the CRA. Cryptocurrency might seem mysterious, but to the CRA, crypto is just another commodity, and your money tells a story once it leaves the crypto world and enters your regular bank account.

Social media

Tax auditors have been known to snoop around on public social media accounts. Posting pictures of your new fancy car, tropical vacations, and millionaire lifestyle while filing low-income taxes will give CRA audit officers the evidence they need against you, using your own words and pictures.

Square and stripe

If you swipe credit cards through a digital card reader or accept online transactions through Stripe, those companies track every dollar you transact.

Similar to how your bank can be asked to verify your balances, third-party payment processors store records of how much money passes through their systems.

eBay Sales

Are you selling items online through eBay? The CRA distinguishes between hobby selling and businesses when auditing online sellers.

Based on how often you turn over inventory through your eBay store and how long you’ve been selling, the CRA can identify your online storefront as a business you should have registered.

Foreign accounts

Canada has information-sharing agreements with over 100 countries. So if you have a foreign online bank account, investment account, or anything else abroad, chances are that information was reported to the CRA.

Amazon FBA

Running an Amazon FBA feels like selling online, but the CRA knows when you ship products from Amazon’s warehouses.

Because Amazon collects payments from customers, there’s a paper trail of sales going directly to Amazon. And if you’re caught hiding income from the CRA, they can easily request your sales records from Amazon.

Crowdfunding sites

Money received through crowdfunding websites isn’t always considered taxable income. But it can be, depending on what you use the money for.

The CRA knows who’s crowdfunding large amounts of money on sites like Kickstarter and GoFundMe and they’ll know if you should have been reporting those funds.

Domain registrations

Owning multiple websites or expensive domain names can come up in a CRA audit.

Domain registration companies keep public records associating websites with owners. Auditors can pick up on patterns of website ownership as potential businesses you may not have reported.

App store earnings

Do you sell iPhone apps or video games? If you transact money through Apple or Google, those companies store strict sales records of every download and customer in-app purchase.

Tax agencies routinely acquire copies of the tax documents Apple & Google issue to their developers.

Influencer gifts

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-18667" src="https://canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Shutterstock_2488358005.jpg" alt="Indian woman, influencer and home on smartphone with box as gift for social media and live streaming.
As an influencer or online seller, if you’re accepting free products from companies to post about on your page, CRA will count those items as income.

Just because you didn’t physically get paid for that giveaway post or brand partnership, CRA can estimate how much those free gifts were worth to you.

Short-term rentals

The CRA audits more than just Airbnb users. They also look at Facebook Marketplace and local underground rental pages.

If you’re regularly making income through cash rent payments for properties you own or rent rooms in your home, expect trouble if you don’t report that money to CRA.

Spending

If your reported income is $20,000 but your online credit card statements show you are spending $80,000 a year, the CRA will want to know where the extra money is coming from.

They can look at your spending habits to find proof of “invisible” income.

Looking to overhaul your budget and save some extra cash? We all know the importance of mindful spending and maximizing the value of our money. Everyday expenses can quickly add up, but with a few strategic adjustments, you can cut costs without sacrificing your enjoyment. In this guide, we’ll explore 15 money-wasting items you won’t miss once you eliminate them from your budget. From reducing daily indulgences to finding cost-effective alternatives, these tips will help you manage your finances more efficiently and free up funds for things that truly matter.

#1. Bottled Water Purchases

Buying bottled water can add up quickly and is also harmful to the environment. Investing in a reusable water bottle is a simple and effective way to save money. You can refill it throughout the day, reducing the need to purchase bottled water. Additionally, you can get creative by adding fruits or herbs to your water for a refreshing twist.

#2. Daily Coffee Shop Visits

Many of us have a habit of stopping by coffee shops every morning for our caffeine fix. However, making your own coffee at home can save a significant amount of money. Investing in a quality coffee maker might seem like an upfront expense, but it will pay off in the long run. Plus, brewing your coffee allows you to customize it exactly to your liking. By cutting out daily coffee shop visits, you can save a considerable amount each year, which can be redirected towards more important financial goals.

#3. Subscription Services You Rarely Use

Subscription services can quietly drain your bank account, especially if you rarely use them. It’s easy to lose track of all the subscriptions you’ve signed up for, but regularly reviewing and canceling the ones you no longer need can free up a substantial amount of money. If you find yourself missing a particular service, you can always re-subscribe later. Prioritizing the subscriptions that bring you the most value can help streamline your expenses.

#4. Going Out for Lunch

Dining out for lunch frequently can be a significant drain on your budget. Bringing your lunch from home is a cost-effective alternative that allows for greater control over ingredients and portion sizes. Preparing meals ahead of time can ensure you have delicious, healthy options ready to go. Reserving dining out for special occasions can help you enjoy these experiences more without impacting your budget.

#5. Impulse Purchases at the Grocery Store

Impulse buys at the grocery store can quickly inflate your shopping bill. To avoid this, make a detailed list before you shop and stick to it. Meal planning can also help eliminate the need for last-minute purchases, ensuring you buy only what you need. By avoiding spontaneous snacks and unnecessary items, you can keep your grocery spending under control and save both money and calories.

#6. Unused Gym Memberships

Gym memberships can be expensive, especially if you don’t use them regularly. If you find yourself skipping the gym more often than not, consider canceling your membership and exploring other ways to stay active. Jogging in your neighborhood, following online workout videos, or joining community fitness groups are excellent alternatives that can help you stay fit without the monthly fee.

#7. Buying New Clothes Frequently

While buying new clothes can be enjoyable, it can also strain your budget. Instead of constantly purchasing new items, consider shopping at thrift stores or organizing clothing swaps with friends. These alternatives can help you find unique, stylish pieces without spending a fortune. Reducing the frequency of new clothing purchases can significantly impact your overall spending.

#8. Brand-Name Medications

Brand-name medications can be significantly more expensive than their generic counterparts. Before refilling your prescription, ask your doctor or pharmacist about generic alternatives. These options often provide the same benefits at a fraction of the cost, helping you manage your healthcare expenses more effectively.

#9. Premium Cable or Satellite TV Packages

Many households pay for extensive cable or satellite TV packages but only watch a few channels. Downsizing your package or switching to streaming services can significantly reduce your monthly expenses. With the wide variety of affordable streaming options available, you can still enjoy your favorite shows and movies without the hefty cable bill.

#10. Expensive Cocktails or Drinks at Bars

Enjoying cocktails at bars can be a costly habit. Opting for beer, which is typically cheaper, or taking advantage of happy hour specials can help reduce your spending. Limiting the number of drinks you order can also keep costs down. By being mindful of your beverage choices, you can still enjoy a night out without overspending.

#11. Buying Snacks From Vending Machines

Snacking from vending machines is convenient but often expensive. Planning and packing your snacks from home can save money and provide healthier options. By preparing snacks in advance, you can avoid the temptation of vending machines and ensure you have nutritious choices readily available.

#12. Pre-packaged Convenience Foods

Pre-packaged convenience foods might save time but are often costly and less healthy. Cooking from scratch is a more budget-friendly and nutritious alternative. Planning and preparing meals in advance can make cooking at home more manageable, ensuring you have delicious and affordable options ready to go.
